Linguistics in Anthropology
When we begin to dive into the study of humans, also known as Anthropology, there are so many subdivisions we can learn about. One very interesting clump within the study of Anthropology can be classified as Linguistic Anthropology. In this instance, anthropologists study language and how the development and its use can be studied to understand culture. According to the department of Anthropology at California State University Long beach, Anthropologists are interested in learning “how many languages there are, how those languages are distributed across the world, and their contemporary and historical relationships. This can help to discover why some humans speak a certain way or how social groups differ from one another. In addition this gives an insight to how humans in the past might have interacted with each other when they were in different social groups.
We use developmental linguistics to uncover the process of speech development. We are able to understand why people develop a certain ways in regards to speech, what influences their speech habits, and how speech plays a role in development as well. One case study, about a little girl Genie, who was neglected and abused by her family, shows how language is critical in child development. “The only words addressed to her were angry ones. She could say ‘stopit’, ‘nomore,’ ‘no,’ and a few other negative words. At age 13, she understood only 20 words” (Ellensburg). With limited speech interaction and abuse from her parents, she had many mental and physical disabilities. Developmental linguistics magnifies how important language is and the effects it can have on those who have no understanding of language.
When learning about how our brain interacts with language, we learn about neurolinguistics. Researchers try to find out how the brain can understand the complexity that is the human language. It goes much deeper than us being able to memorize words. We have to understand imaging, theoretical ideas and situations, time, sarcasm, mannerism, and much more. Nature and nurture both play a significant role in language development. Language development refers to how children understand, organise, speak and use words in order to communicate at an effective, age-appropriate level (Karen Kearns, 2013, P.105). For centuries, theorists have been debating the roles of nature versus nurture. Although, each child’s language will develop at their own pace and there will be many individual differences based on culture, ethnicity, health and ability. As well as physical, social, emotional and cognitive development in which will contribute to a child’s language development.
The communication with your child starts way before the youngster can speak. From their cry, smile, and the responses they give you to help you understand his or her needs. Language developments have different stages that children pass through to assist them in the development of speech and languages. There are a plethora of factors which can inhabitants’ a child language development. However, these are amongst the top causes for language development such as a child’s inborn ability to learn language and the language the child hears.
But “if there is a difficulty understanding what people say, difficulty speaking or forming sounds or words and using language in appropriate social contexts then this can affect a child’s behaviour and emotional development”. (Speech, Language Communication Action Plan 2011)
In 1970, the case of Genie emerged, an abused child was mentally and physically delayed due to the social isolation condition she was raised. Genie’s case is studied and analyzed by many different aspects, such as phonology, semantics, morphology, and other research areas. Victoria Fromkin’s article “The Development of Language in Genie: A case of Language Acquisition Beyong the “Critical Period”” analyzed Genie’s case from five major aspects, which include linguistic comprehension, speech production and phonological development, sentence structure, cognitive development, and linguistic development in relation to normals. His analysis helps us to understand the language learning process and how the environment plays an important of language learning.
Language is a code made up of rules that include what words mean, how to make words, how to put them together, and what word combinations are best in what situations. Speech is the oral form of language. The purpose of this study is to find out the developmental stages the child goes through in the acquisition of language from birth to 5 years.
The case of “Genie” is a tragic look at the effects of child abuse and neglect on childhood development. Genie’s case was particularly extreme, as she lived the first 13 years of her life in isolation and confinement. With little to no human interaction throughout her entire life, she developed no language skills. Researchers were extremely interested in this case, as it gave them a chance to explore two theories of language development. One theory is Noam Chomsky’s view that children are born with an innate ability to learn and understand language. Chomsky termed this structure in our brain the “Language Acquisition Device” (LAD). An alternate theory by Eric Lenneberg stated that language development is a result of our environment, and stressed the importance of critical periods. Lenneberg believed that the critical period for language development only lasted until around 12 years of age, and inability to develop language during these critical periods would result in major deficits.
Although Jim did learn speech it became noticeably odd to others around him as he had developed his own, unique grammatical characteristics and his poor articulation meant he didn’t acquire normal language skills (Sachs et al 1981). Bruner suggests that this was due to lack of social interaction in his learning of speech, which again highlights the importance of nurture in promoting a child’s language development.

From a baby 's first word to their first complete sentence, there 's a lot to debate with their language development. The average child has a vocabulary of up to six-thousand words by the time they turn five years old (Brighthubcom, 2016). Language development is one of the most critical roles for an educator in both early childhood and primary settings. It is this ability of language development that is particularly interesting in the nature vs nurture debate. In order for educators to provide effective communication, it is important that they have the knowledge and understanding of the four key concepts of language, such as phonological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic development and the underlying theoretical perspectives that explain the processes of language acquisition and development.
Language is the universal connection that brings all humans together. We share this common ground to communicate. The three major points that I would like to focus on are: How does language influence our culture? Does it define us, or does it refine us? And lastly, the impact that language has on our societies.

Originally, linguistics was my intended major. Recently, I decided to switch my major to anthropology, and more specifically, the field of linguistic anthropology. For the linguistics major, one of my requirements for transferring to a university was to take a language and culture class. Several of the first lectures focused on the history of linguistics and anthropology. I was introduced to the idea that language, thought, and culture all influence each other. This meant that studying language, when divorced from the concept of culture, creates a myopic view of linguistics. It had never occurred to me that linguistic does not occur in a vacuum and needs to be examined alongside the culture it is associated with. Seeds of change were then sown in my mind. As the class progressed, I found myself growing more interested in the subject as a whole, and so anthropology became my major.
