Literary Analysis of “The White Paint” The short story “The White Paint”, loyalty and betrayal are displayed to show the struggles throughout a relationship. John has always been loyal to his wife for seven years now, he presents his loyalty to her by working hard every day on the farm. “John never hired a man to help him. He wanted a mortgage-free farm; then a new house and pretty clothes for her” (3). John’s persona demonstrates how he puts others before himself for the happiness of others, he does many things for his wife, such as having a roof over their head, clothes for her to wear and soon hopefully, a new home. John risks his own life going through the snowstorm to visit his old father who lives alone, and does not take care of his own well-being. As Ann says, “I’d like you to spend a little time on yourself” (2). John spends so much time on other and the farm that he endangers himself; for instance, lack of sleep, his physical appearance and not waiting until the storm settles down to visit his father. On the first page, when John decides to visit his father, he leaves Steven his best friend with his wife Ann to keep her company because she does not like to be left alone at home. When she is usually alone, “she [needs] something to keep her hands occupied, something to stave off the gathering cold and loneliness” (3). In result, she decides to paint. She paints the kitchen woodwork and the bedroom door white. The paint symbolizes things she enjoys doing when she needs comfort because John is rarely ever around to accompany her from the loneliness she feels. As Ann is alone at home, diction shows the thought of sadness when she thinks about their seven years of marriage. She keeps thinking “Seven years a farmer’s wife” (1). Ann sees herself less as an individual person, but as someone who does not have a name and is identified as a farmer’s wife. For seven years now, Ann has not felt happy with their marriage, but rather sad. Ann feels like she cannot be loyal to her relationship to John anymore, which leads to the fact that she cheats on John with Steven. When Steven came over to keep Ann company. She sees him as a handsome man, with dark and trimmed hair, with “young lips curved soft and full”
