In the english sonnet “Neurasthenia” by Agnes Mary F. Robinson, the poet uses lines 13-14 to display multiple literary elements and convey the overall meaning that we will never know unless we try.
To begin, the Robinson states in lines 13-14, “Yes! in the radiant air how could i know how black it is, how fast it is, below?”(Robinson 13-14). The poet uses this quote to signify the volta of the sonnet. Here, the volta signifies a major tone shift of the speaker’s feelings. The speaker speaks both quatrains in a very depressed tone and implies a sense of emptiness; after the volta, the speaker shifts to a sanguine attitude by displaying the urge to change their miserable feelings. With this, the speaker views the area “below” as the dark light of their life; the dark also symbolizes the unknown elements of life. First, the speaker uses the color black in the sense of sadness or demise of one’s personality. By originally comparing their depressed state to radiance, the reader infers that the future that is associated with the color black will result in even more sadness or the complete demise of normality that the speaker currently holds. Secondly, the poet uses the color black to symbolize the speaker’s feelings of uncertainty and emptiness. The reader infers that the speaker is empty due to the fact that they are subdued from the real world, and serve only as an observer. In addition, poet uses the
