In the first chapter of "Red Wind", the anti-hero protagonist Marlowe is in a bar with a young bartender and a drunk customer. Marlowe had no interest in interrupting other people 's business. A man called "Waldo", who is killed by the drunk guy later, walks in looking for a woman with very detailed description of the woman. After the war, people are numb when they see the murder. Having the murder take place in the first chapter attracts the reader. In the story when the policemen get involved after the murder, they are useless in finding the truth. Corruption happens in real life as well, especially after the war. Chandler wants to convey that people can only depend on themselves instead of waiting for help. “Red Wind also gets people to think in different ways in regards to the core narrative, stylistic gaps, literary tools and understanding of what Chandler wants the reader to get out of the story”. (Moon, 2012).

In the novel “Fahrenheit 451”, by Ray Bradbury, the people of society burn books and are evidently non-intellectual. They have no books to read, and the few that have stolen books, are considered criminals. Surprisingly, the loss of books drastically impacted the society. Rather than literature being contradictory and in conflict with the truth and unpleasant reality of daily life, it becomes a weapon through which we can be educated about the existential crises facing our world today. In fact, the statement above could not be more far and distant from the reality of literature today. It is fatally flawed. Literature, whilst at the surface, seems whimsical and amusing is, at its very core, a medium through which we are enlightened
Literature is an imitation of societal values and is thus a reflection of the human experience of a time period. Essentially, the culture of a time period is manifested through writing in the projection of society’s values, symbolism of the center of community and literature itself.
