Litter is a very important environmental issue. There are several litter statistics. For example, 1. 9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean every year. 2. $11.5 billion is spent every year for litter clean up. 3. 50% of litter are cigarette butts. 75% of people admitted they have littered in the past 5 years. The object that is most found during the clean up of litter is fast food garbage. Based off of surveys, men are likely to litter more than women. Lastly, most people who would deliberately litter are those between the ages of 18-34. There are several sources of littering. Pedestrians often drop garbage in the streets and roadways and they contribute to the overflow of public trash cans. Motorists litter by discarding garbage out of their vehicle windows expecting someone else to clean their mess. Uncovered loads is another source. If items are not securely attached to vehicles it can easily be blown out of trucks and cause roadside littering. Households garbage contribute to littering especially if for example, trash bins are pushed over into the streets. Construction project, illegal …show more content…
Litter laws have been put in place in the United States. “In 10 states, for example, the weight or volume of litter determines the severity of the crime. Other states focus on the type of litter, imposing penalties for dumping large items, such as furniture or major appliances. Many states have also enacted legislation to address littering in certain places, such as public highways, coastal areas, and recreational areas.” A law in California is for the first offense the fine is between $100-$1,000 and eight hours of community service. For the Second offense the fine is between $500 and $1,000, and at least 16 hours of litter cleanup. Frequent offenses is a fine between $750 and $1,000, and at least 24 hours of litter cleanup. Imprisonment can also be an option depending on the
When littering occurs and that one person who can’t stand it watches, you might have some problems. The short essay “A Couple of Really Neat Guys” by Dave Barry really explains this well. It shares a universal truth about one person’s big pet peeve, littering. As he makes it clear how much he thinks littering is disrespectful, he also demonstrates sarcasm and satire.
Did you know that littering could damage the environment. I believe that people should pick up trash and not litter everywhere it could be a fire hazard also it is bad for people's health and it is bad for the environment. littering is a fire hazard. Also it is bad for the environment and it's bad for people's health. people's health cares and if we don't pick up the trash and stop littering we will be endangered and so make sure up stop littering and pick all of it up.
Littering can be a major fire hazard, all its takes is one discarded cigarette butt into a pile rubbish to ignite a towering inferno of sadness. If we litter too much garbage will pile up and will grow a harmful bacteria which would make us sick. It
A person’s trash can be analyzed to see whether or not they eat healthy, their sexual lifestyle, and more importantly to the environment how much people waste. I was challenged with the task of dealing with 102 tons of trash produced by my lifestyle, and I had to propose a method in which I could decrease my overall trash consumption. First and foremost, I would collect data on the amount of my household was producing to have data on my input and output of good to waste. Then I would start recycling my bottles, cans, glass bottles, etc… or take them to my nearest recycling center, to eliminate the level of recyclables that I was previously disposing. I would also watch how I shop and cook to stop the amount of “good waste” that I produce, after that I would began analyzing what I was actually throwing in the garbage and decide what could be reused. These are all small factors that wouldn’t affect my quality of life directly, but they would make my environment better to live in, making me healthier and more comfortable with a cleaner as well as safer space to live
Have you ever thought about what your community would look like without litter? If so, it may take a while to find out. One person throwing something on the ground may not think much of it, however, when that trash finds other trash, they begin to build up and make big piles of junk. For example, I am sure people never thought that if they littered, their trash would end up in the pacific garbage patch. Believe it or not, no one thinks that until you look at the pacific garbage patch and see how disgusting it looks just because people were to lazy to throw their trash away. To make matters worse, littering has become very common, which should be stopped because in most cases, trash is not disposed of properly,
According to the Humane Society, littering is an indirect killer. Animals get curious and want to explore unknown items that they come across. Many will smell it and probably try to chew on it. Some animals end up getting trapped it it. The most common piece of trash that people litter is gum. Some birds mistake it for food and end up with their beak stuck together or the gum stuck in their throat making them unable to eat. These birds starve and die all at the hand of someone just spitting their gum out on the side
Many people today don’t even see littering as a crime. Everywhere you go whether its streets, towns, or beaches there always seems to be an abundant amount of trash in the area. The fact that we Americans keep continuing to litter is horrible, it’s as if we think littering is a joke. A particular situation with littering happened to me as a student while in high school. We had taken a campus field trip to the beach every student was allowed to bring food, drinks, and even their own ice chest. As it was time to leave our supervisors notice all of the trash we students left. We thought it was no harm and continued to walk to our bus, but our supervisors didn’t like that. So they decided to make all of the students to pick up the trash we left and then they gave us a lecture about littering. As you see the adolescents are starting to care less about minor laws, my experience shows that this reality is becoming
Statistics show that over 1.5 billion more tons of garbage ends up in the ocean each year than is actually thrown away. Not only does this contribute to the amount to fish reported dead every day, but it takes around 11.5 billion dollars every year to help treat the mess. Even so, the litter is building up at such a fast rate we can not even begin to make progress. People of ages 18-34 tend to litter much more than others. If a method is found to target this crowd and make it more convenient to recycle, a large part of the problem could be
When you are driving down the roads of Miami County, all you see is litter. My vision for the future of Miami County is to have little to no litter on the ground because it looks better, is better for the economy, and is better for the animals. Less litter is better looking to the eyes and is less trashy looking. That makes it look very trashy and makes it look like we all don’t care about the Earth and what shape it’s in. Less litter is also better for the economy, for the ground, and also for the water. Litter is very bad for the earth. Litter in the water can kill organisms. Litter on the ground pollutes the soil, which can pollute the plants that grow in the soil or can stop the plants from growing. If animals or humans eat the plants that
Rain and irrigation from lawns and gardens wash litter off the surfaces of streets and sidewalks into
Whenever I see someone litter from now on I will make sure to stop them and inform them on how someone must clean up their mess and how they are being disrespectful to other humans and the environment. I will probably not continue this service opportunity and do it again because although I love nature, I do not enough trash or germs; however, I will continually spread the message of no littering. Even though I have not acquired a love for cleaning up trails, this service opportunity still has been very worthwhile. Through this location, I learned the importance of a clean environment and how much of a burden litter really is not only for nature but also for people whose job it is to clean up the environment. I have gained a better understanding of nature and litter which will help me in the future to be more aware and help the world be a cleaner
It may seem harmless and innocent, but littering is an unhealthy habit people of all ages in each country do every day. Littering is a second nature to some people; after doing it for so long and often, they do not realize they do it. As more and more people continue to litter, environments, animals, and humans are being harmed by people’s carless actions. Americans, as well as all humans, need to be more aware of how hazardous and costly littering is to the world and the creatures living in it. Littering shows lack of respect for the world, and needs to be prevented in order for future generations to live in a clean and healthy environment.
Imagine you on the beach going to the ocean to take a swim. Ouch! All the sudden you slice your foot. But you don't know what you cut yourself on. How about litter? You want to swim in the ocean right? You can't if you litter. There are so many problems in the world, but our number one is littering. It affects us in many ways. For example you get hurt easily. There is a ton of litter on our beaches. I know this because on a website called ehp.qld.gov.au it says, "It's not only heavily-used beaches which are affected. A 1991 survey of 26 remote Great Barrier Reef islands found 5656 items of rubbish. Among the plastic, glass and metal debris were 725 glass bottles, 1066 plastic fragments, 247 aluminum cans and plastic cups, 919 thongs
Littering is one of the biggest environmental issues we face today. Littering affects us all, from humans to animals and our surroundings. The careless act of littering from a simple piece of plastic thrown on the ground can clog storm drains or that piece of plastic may go straight to the ocean and harm wildlife. Littering is a health hazard which causes harmful bacteria and germs. Removing litter from the environment costs everyone money. Littering is the most important environmental issue our nation is facing because it is done so easily and carelessly. People do not realize how much we spend on cleaning litter every year or how it affects us all. The practice has become second nature, we have avoided to educate ourselves on how this affects us in the long run. Littering needs to be minimized or if possible, completely stopped if we could help it because we are doing more harm to the earth.
Littering is a psychological habit that is formed in young developing minds by observing other humans actions. This is because cavemen and our ancestors would designate spots to leave their waste. It allowed for them to be cleanly, and not defecate where they ate. This lowered the chances of contracting viruses that would be potentially harmful to their lives; or having predators visiting their food scraps and stumbling upon an even bigger meal.
