Litter is a very important environmental issue. There are several litter statistics. For example, 1. 9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean every year. 2. $11.5 billion is spent every year for litter clean up. 3. 50% of litter are cigarette butts. 75% of people admitted they have littered in the past 5 years. The object that is most found during the clean up of litter is fast food garbage. Based off of surveys, men are likely to litter more than women. Lastly, most people who would deliberately litter are those between the ages of 18-34. There are several sources of littering. Pedestrians often drop garbage in the streets and roadways and they contribute to the overflow of public trash cans. Motorists litter by discarding garbage out of their vehicle windows expecting someone else to clean their mess. Uncovered loads is another source. If items are not securely attached to vehicles it can easily be blown out of trucks and cause roadside littering. Litter laws have been put in place in the United States. “In 10 states, for example, the weight or volume of litter determines the severity of the crime. Other states focus on the type of litter, imposing penalties for dumping large items, such as furniture or major appliances. Many states have also enacted legislation to address littering in certain places, such as public highways, coastal areas, and recreational areas.” A law in California is for the first offense the fine is between $100-$1,000 and eight hours of community service. For the Second offense the fine is between $500 and $1,000, and at least 16 hours of litter cleanup. Frequent offenses is a fine between $750 and $1,000, and at least 24 hours of litter cleanup.
