Courage is when someone does something for non-selfish reasons, no matter how frightening it may be. It’s not just physical bravery that can be considered courage, just speaking out can be just as powerful. A person is courageous when they make decisions that help positively affect another person's life. It means you stick up for what's right no matter the consequences that follow. People can express courage through following their hearts, standing up for what’s right, and expanding their horizons. One trait that aligns with my beliefs of courage is people must always follow their hearts. The article that best shows this is “High school senior comes out as ‘LGBT’ while accepting award” by: Mike Krumboltz. This text is about Jacob, a teenage …show more content…
The article that best shows this trait is “Little things are Big” by: Jesus Colon. It is about a black man named Jesus Colon, who was riding a subway and encountered a woman and her children with her hands full. He knew he should go offer her his help but he was indecisive because they were two opposite races during a highly segregated time period. He ended up walking past her acting as if she weren’t even there. One specific example from the article is seen in paragraph 4, where it says, “...I pushed by her like I saw nothing as if I were insensitive to her needs.” This article makes him sound like a coward because he saw a chance to help a person was struggling, but he ignored the opportunity because he thought she would be racist toward him. During this occasion he did act like a coward because he was worrying about what ifs, rather than gaining the strength to go over and ask if she needed any assistants. After this incident occurred, Jesus immediately regretted his actions and you can see this in last paragraph where it says, “... if I am ever faced with an occasion like that again, I am going to offer my help regardless of how the off is going to be received.” From this you can clearly tell Jesus expanded his horizon because initially he was under the impression that ever caucasian person would be racist toward him due to his skin color. He learned that just because others may be rude to …show more content…
The article that best fits this is “When a Middle School Cheerleader with Down Syndrome Was Bullied, The Basketball Team Stepped Up To Defend Her” by: Jenna Birch. This article was about a cheerleader with down syndrome named Desiree, getting bullied by the fans in the bleachers because of her condition at a middle school basketball game. The basketball players from her school witnessed the bullying occurring, so they immediately stopped what they were doing to come to her side and defend her. One example from the article that is in paragraph 2, it says “He refused to be a bystander to her bullying.” This was about the basketball player who was the first to defend the cheerleader with down syndrome. He is courageous because he acted right when he saw there was trouble occurring. He didn’t wait or hesitate, he acted on the spot before the bad situation turned into a terrible situation. He refused to be a follower and make fun of her like everyone else. He was a leader and put the followers in their place by opening their eyes by showing them right vs wrong. This boy developed the trait of courage at a young age because he knew your actions should never be selfish, they should positively affect others lives as well as your own. Another example from the article seen in paragraph 6, where it says, “Those boys, I tried to talk to them in person, but I couldn’t keep the tears back.” This was
In the short story “Little Things are Big” by Jesus Colon “regardless” is the most meaningful word because it impacts the character’s response to different situations. The story “Little Things are Big” by Jesus Colon is about a Puerto Rican man who gets on train and sees a white women carrying a suitcase, a baby, and 2 more trailing her. The man wants to help her get off the train because she has a lot to care for. Getting of the train can also be difficult and it is late now, he is Puerto Rican, and he does not want to be taken as something other than he is; trying to help. The train comes to a stop and instead of offering his help he runs past not even sharing a glance with the women, he regretted it the whole way home.
Jackie Robinson demonstrated this character trait when he started to play major league baseball and endure racial threats from fans and teammates. For example, according to the text “Hero” “When he was summoned by history, he risked his safety and sanity to give history the last full measure of his strength, nerve, and perseverance.” (Scott) This shows courage because he had to take the racial threats and harmful words and not fight back. Knowing something bad could happen. This made Jackie Robinson a successful civil rights advocate because he showed what people of color could do without
Courage is a cardinal virtue every human being needs. Courage is doing something frightening you are for the right being even if you are alone in your belief. Many regular humans have used courage also. For example Dr. Martin Luther King jr. stood up for all African Americans, even though almost everyone did not agree with him. He eventually helped end segregation by raising awareness. Sadly, Dr. Martin Luther King jr. was killed just for his beliefs. Today we celebrate a holiday for his great bravery. Bravery is a synonym of courage.
Courage to me means the ability to do something that frightens you even if there are consequences. Use your fear, it can take you to the place where you store your courage - Amelia Earhart
Courage is as stated in The New International Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language to be “the capacity to meet danger or difficulty with firmness.” In my mind courage has always meant doing what you had to do, and dealing with it because you had to. I never had a choice in my life whether I wanted to move to a different city
Courage is a trait that has been possessed by a lot of leaders in history, from presidential leaders to civil right leaders, to even athletic coaches, courage is used in every leadership position and is a very important trait when wanting to become a leader. Courage takes a lot of self-work you must be fully committed to your values and what you believe in before you go out and get a career like Job. Frederick Douglas escaped slavery and later became a main leader of the anti-slavery movement through all his published writings. Courageous leaders also make time for their peers and their employees because courageous leaders not only believe in themselves but believe in the team that works for them. Courage is also shown through sports form coaches to players. They are required to sacrifice some of their beliefs so their team can be one unit and work as one. They show courage day in and down out, standing up for what they believe in and their team which speaks volumes within an organization. Courageous leaders seem to be the most effective type of leaders because those types of leaders relate to you or has a common interest. These leaders preach what they believe and stick to it even through tough times when it calls for them to step outside their box.
A courageous action most often is associated with reaching a goal or task of importance, despite the dangers even risks associated with it (“Courage”). For any specific act to be considered truly courageous it must be reasonably thought about and determined that the goal is well worth the risk or danger (“Courage”). Courage so often can be put with words such as heroic, and bravery although with courage there can be a fine line between courageous acts and plain foolishness. All this can make people believe that courage only applies to physical actions. There are two kinds of courage moral and physical in many cases they are both displayed in a single courageous act; however, bravery must come before all else, because they are associated with reaching a task of importance regardless of risk.
Courage in simple words means an act of bravery. Everyone has their own definition, for some the meaning is much more complicated for others it's very simple. When I think of someone who is courageous I think of my Dad and military individuals people who have fought for their country. People like doctors and scientists people who don't think about themselves when faced with a choice to give up. My definition of courage is a person that has the strength needed to do the unthinkable. Certainly, that is not just it. Courage takes a bigger picture of an act of bravery. When one is courageous enough to do what is right, he earned the utmost respect of human spirit. While some may see being courageous has to be doing a big thing, it boils down to a thing as small as saying “Sorry, I was
Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death. However, he continued to persevere through it all, and was able to accomplish great things for his country. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, who promoted the education of girls in her country. Despite the clear threat of the Taliban, she continued to fight hard for her cause. Courage can be defined in many different ways, such as the ability to persevere and accomplish something in a frightening or risky situation. Examples of courage can be seen all around the world. Without courageous people, society would not have been able to improve. Being courageous is difficult, and requires an abundance of dedication and perseverance. It also includes remaining strong, despite the challenges that may occur along the way.
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
Courage is being able to do what people believe is right without caring what others think. This is shown through the character Atticus in the novel To Kill Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. To begin with, Atticus stands up for what he thinks is right when he sits in front of the jail protecting Tom Robinson from all the men that try to hurt him. During the confrontation at the jailhouse, Atticus and Mr. Cunningham say this to each other, “‘Get aside from the door Mr. Finch’ ‘You can turn around and go home again Walter’” (Lee 151). The men are trying to get through the door to Tom. Atticus knew the men were coming to get Tom, and he knew he had to stop them. When Atticus’s courage was questioned by Mr. Cunningham, he did not back down. Atticus showed his courage through
Another type of courage is to stand up for other people. people who see this
Take activist Zachary Ebers for example. Zach made a Cereal Drive for families and food pantries so kids and parents can not have to hope they even get a breakfast when they go to bed the day each night. Zach wasn’t very good at talking publicly and to principles. Zach had to face his fear and completed his goal. Alex Lin also shows acts of courage. Alex had to speak in front of executives and governors so he can pass his law. That must have taken a lot of courage to do. Even though both teens have been doing different things to change the world, they both needed courage to help complete their
People who are courageous are able to achieve their goals, to stand up and to have their say in what is right and what is wrong. They might’ve made mistakes in life, but if they are willing to reach it, they will get up and try again, becoming stronger than ever at trying to pursue their goals.
As the world expands and our communities start multiplying, it seems to be arduous to interact with people who have a 50% chance to either be kind or cruel. Sometimes those vicious people can bring you down and make you feel so small ,but what can you do stop this? Courage comes around and pushes yourself forward through life’s challenges and obstacles. If you don’t know how to use it then there are some alternatives to help your quest to find the valor in you. The dramatic novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee has the most guidance in that area. Courage is the ability for people to attempt a risky task in their lives even when the likelihood of failure is very high.
