Liz Claiborne Accomplishments

Liz Claiborne immigrated from Belgium to America. When Liz claiborne saw that many women were entering into business, she saw the need for comfortable women work clothes. When liz claiborne had this idea she could not convince her employers that they needed better women clothes. Since, her company launched her clothes are popular. Liz claiborne was now a co founder of her own firm. Liz claiborne also founded an organization helping different cause around the world. Her company greatly affected working women in America.

In order to understand what motivated Liz Claiborne to become such a successful woman, it is helpful to go back her roots. Liz Claiborne was born in Brussels, Belgium on March 31st 1929, which was nine years after the Women’s Rights Movement ended in America. She had exposure to art in her childhood from her father who taught her to appreciate art and her mother who taught her to sew. Liz Claiborne spent her early years in Brussels and became a bilingual person who could speak French and English fluently. In 1939, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana with her parents due to the threats from Nazis (Bernstein 1; “Liz Claiborne’ Biography”).

Nikola Tesla was born into a modest, Eastern European family, but had an interest in technology and inventing from an early age. Like many Europeans, he would move to America in search of greater opportunity and success. However, unlike most of his European counterparts, Tesla's achievements in electrical engineering would change the world forever. From electric motors to AC current to one of the hydroelectric dams in the world, his designs and inventions changed the way we live. While Nikola is a lesser known historic figure than other inventors of Industrial Revolution, he is one the most important engineers in modern history.

When Tesla was a young lad he was always thinking about the future as shown by Ronald H. Bailey, ‘“ Someday I’ll harness that power,”’ said Tesla when he saw a picture of Niagara Falls as a boy” (Bailey 6). Nikola Tesla was a brilliant innovative man from the time he was a boy, he was already thinking of his future as well as future technology. He thought of things even as a boy that had not been dreamed possible and are still functioning to this day. Nikola Tesla was an important and innovative figure in American history because he embodied our future, was passionate about his work and created systems that no one ever thought possible, some of which are favored to this very day.

Tesla and Edison worked together creating many inventions while Tesla made improvement on some of Edison’s work. But, unfortunately, as Edison mainly wanted to profit off of his works Tesla just focused on making inventions for the science and benefiting others with providing free electricity. So due to these differences the two parted ways. But this made Tesla vulnerable to profiteers. In 1885 Tesla got funding for Tesla Electric Light Company to improve Arc and AC electrical systems. As because of this he was successful in providing patents for his AC inventions. Soon businessman George Westinghouse purchased his patented AC inventions in order to accomplish providing long-distance power for $60,000 cash. As at this time Tesla was in competition with Edison. With all the negative press campaigns put towards Tesla’s AC electricity, Tesla invented what is known as the “Tesla coil” which is wireless technology we still use today. Along with the invention of the Tesla coil Nikola also helped invent electricity generators, and the induction motor which was mostly AC based machinery. The Westinghouse Corporation was chosen to supply the lighting for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Her first job was working with Macy 's in 1901 at the age of 15. She began as salesclerk, and progressed serving as a mannequin and a milliner. While at Macy 's she received the equivalent of a fashion education, as well as sharpening her business acumen. Her passion for design, combined with her unparralleled ability creating fashion styles, and the encouragement of her peers ensured that the rest of her life would dedicated to fashion.

As one could see America was made and created by these men and women, so what could America do without their help? Immigrants made a tremendous impact in engineering, politics, and as entrepreneurs. Hundreds of immigrants fled their country in pursuit of a better career, and one immigrant helped mold the United States in engineering. This magnificently hard working immigrant was Nikola Tesla.

Liz Claiborne took a great effect in the fashion industry. Born as Anne Elizabeth Jane Claiborne in Brussels Belgium, Claiborne always had a love for art/fashion. Her and her family moved to New Orleans in 1939, but Claiborne moved back to Europe to study art. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a priest and his mother created appliances to help with farm work. Tesla stated his inventive creativity came from his mother.

His dream was about to come true when George Westinghouse hired him. George let Tesla develop all his ideas and Tesla finally produced his invention alternating current (AC). He then became a U.S. citizen in 1889. In 1891 he made another invention called the Tesla coil. It helped create many other inventions that used the Tesla coil the television, a computer screen, the radio, and other electronics. Then Tesla was struck by depression because of his mother's death in 1892. By about 1895 Tesla became a poor man due to a number of failed inventions, so he tried to get a contract with the military. His first attempt to get a military contract was automated submarines and boats, but the government didn't accept his offer. He finally got a military contract from the German Marine High Command. He made turbines for the Germans, and it's thought to be used for their U-boats. Soon After World War 1 started and Tesla had to cancel his concert or he would have been arrested for treason. Tesla was broke again and was desperate for money so he attempted to build a death ray for the U.S. military. It's unknown what components Tesla used for this machine and if it even worked.
