In the novel “A long walk to water” by Linda Sue Park, Salva, a young man that lived in South Sudan throughout his childhood to his young-adult years, had faced many difficult challenges the young age of eleven. Salva had to flee from home because of Sudan’s civil war. He soon experienced a horrifying and dreadful life, his family gone, no resources in his group, he watched people die, walked for months, and lead twelve hundred boys to a refugee camp in Kenya. Salva survived this terrible life with the help of three factors, perseverance, luck, and relationships with others. Without any of these factors, Salva might not have been able to survive or possibly become the leader he is today.

I have been reading the book, “Long Walk to Water,” and Salva and Nya have been shaping their identities; Salva has been staying alive this whole journey, Nya has been able to walk all the way to a pond of water, just to get water. Nya has had to rely on the water to tell if she had to get water. Salva has been through sickness from food, bee stings, and wasn’t killed the rebels.

Salva had a positive attitude to survive.when he was in the u.s he didn’t forget about the people in sudan.Which made him want to get clean water for them and he did.When the war took him away from family,he still hoped he would see them again. Which encouraged to continue walking,so later on he could see his family.

In addition, Salva said he watched as one-man refuse to go with the rebels. The soldiers hit the man in the face with the gun and he fell down on the ground bleeding.

When war threatened villages in Sudan, so many people were forced to leave their homes and families behind. That's just what Salva had to do one dreadful day while at school. The heat and lack of water in Sudan didn’t help Salva survive at all, but acceptance did.

His uncle always had his back and made challenges easy. Once someone special leaves your life it will get harder to deal with not knowing the easy way out. ”Whenever he found himself losing hope, Salva would take a deep breath and think of his uncle's words,”A step at a time. One problem at a time, just figure out this one problem.” (Park, 110). Salva remembered these words to reach his goal. Uncle's words made Salva keep his head up at all time and easy for him to solve his problems that didn't have the knot yet. “Why, why are they shooting at us? Salva had no choice he jumped into the water and began to swim” (Park, 78).This proves that once Salva got to the end of the rope he found a solution and built a knot without his uncle. A young boy grabs on to Salva’s neck and makes it challenging without taking a breath and being forced under water. Once the young kid let's go he jumps up and there was no more shooting, the kid had saved him. At the end of the day, Salva learned how to overcome challenges, a step at a time,a problem at a time until he managed to get to his end

Throughout A Long Walk to Water, Salva goes through many struggles and hardships. Perseverance and hope were some things that helped Salva survive through them. Salva always had hope that his family was out there somewhere throughout the years he was separated from them. His hope was one of the things that kept him going throughout his hardest times. Salva also had many moments of perseverance. Moreover, Salva’s journey through the Akobo desert is a superb example of Salva’s perseverance. Salva had suffered from hunger, dehydration, and the loss of a toenail, but he kept going at a stable pace with the help of his uncle. Salva has portrayed hope and perseverance many times throughout the story.

Imagine running not knowing where you're going but just away from the war when your only 11, this is what happened to Salva. Salva is a character in Linda Sue Park's novel, A Long Walk to Water which is a true story about salva and how he had a huge trek running away from the war. He lives in Southern Sudan and has a wealthy family. He is part of the Dinka tribe which is a rival with the Nuer tribe. The factors that were helpful for the survival of Salva in a harsh environment were how he is self-reliance, drive to find his family, and to be like his Uncle.
