11 year old Salva Dut became orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War, when around 2 million were killed and millions were displaced (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Boys_of_Sudan). In A Long Walk To Water, a book by Linda Sue Park, one of the main themes is perseverance. The book is about a young boy who is forced to flee his village, due to a war. He meets a few people along the way, and he is faced with very catastrophic events. Throughout the book Salva learns how to deal with challenges. He keeps pushing through all of his hardships. Salva keeps going even though he was devastated by the loss of by the loss of his friend Marial. Salva explained the death of his friend as: “A cold fist seemed to grip Salva’s heart”(Park 38). He also kept going even though his uncle was shot dead. His beloved uncle who protected him, guided him, and loved him, was gone. “Now that Salva was without Uncle’s care and protection, the group’s attitude toward him changed”(Park 65). Salva faces traumatic events while crossing the river, as he watches people get shot and killed. Later, Salva learned that thousands had died trying to cross the river, either drowned, shot, or attacked by crocodiles (Park 79). He never gives up no matter how hard the challenges are. He made it to America safely after his long, long journey. “Salva blinked away the tears and took his first step into a new life in America” (Park 96). After he made it to America, he wanted to go back and help the people of Sudan. He didn’t have to, but he made the decision to go back to save his people. Salva is a true leader who makes choices to benefit others. Once he went back to Sudan, he found out his father was alive. His father told him that his mother and sisters were still alive too. Salva “wanted to laugh and cry at the same time” (Park 106). He was so overwhelmed and happy he wanted to go see them. Not only that, but he helped build a well for the people there who don’t have clean water to drink. The people there were always struggling for water.
