The Three E’s of Leadership
Leadership poses an important role in the book “Lord of the Flies”. Much of the story revolves around the altercation between Ralph and Jack as they both strive for the title of leader of the group. Within this bout, the leadership skills within each of the boys rises to surface. However, although they both may possess the skills of a leader, this does not always mean that they are both representative of a good leader. Whether Ralph or Jack’s ideals represent good or malevolence, a true leader practices three skills: engaging people, encouraging people, and enforcing rules.
ENGAGE
A key to leadership is the ability to engage and capture people’s attention. As soon as Ralph first appears in the story, he already begins to act the way a leader should. He comes across as confident yet willing to compromise. When the group of boys elect Ralph as leader, Jack clearly seems angered. However, instead of ignoring this, Ralph offers Jack the opportunity to lead a group of his own choice. From this, Ralph is proven to be a respectable and charismatic character who quickly grabs the attention and reverence of the boys. Ralph first grabs the attention of the boys by blowing into a conch shell which results in a loud trumpet-like sound. Once the group of boys hear the boisterous aural, they all quiet down to listen to what he has to say.
