Critical/ Analytical Response to Literary Texts Assignment By: Christina Caouette Every human comes to face the ugliness of injustice. The character of each individual has significant impact affecting the way they handle cases of unfairness. In the adventure novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding brings to life ideas that the self respect a character possesses will directly influence the manner he handles inequality. Belief in the worthiness and dignity of oneself causes a person to persevere holding onto his morals, even when situations are not in his favor. He refuses to take responsibility for any downfalls the fire may have under his supervision because the balance between bonfire and hunting is ample. Extreme offensive is taken when Ralph hands all blame regarding the boat not stopping due to the lack of smoke on Jack. A “bolting look came into his blue eyes” when one of his least favorite boys, Piggy, accuses him of being the reason why they will not go home. Censure is not taken lightly but those with the self assurance that they are working fiercely. Pride filled individuals will not stand quiet when they wish for a situation to change. Often they feel this way when a circumstance is seen as unfair through their eyes; Ralph as a chief fits under this condition for Jack. As discussed, he holds the dignity to deem that he instead would do a better job. Whereas an insecure person would wait for change, he acts opposite. Jack fuels revolution. He sees many faults; as a result Jack refuses “to be a part of Ralph’s lot” because he knows he can, and will, do better. Copious amounts of courage are required for him to make this stand. Danger increases if he separates from the tribe and goes “off by myself” to live independent from the structure. No guarantee that he would have a single follower was given prior to his speech.
