Lorde: A Brief Biography

The concept of mythical norm was introduced by a feminist writer, Audre Lorde, who critically analyzed the dominant power mechanism in society that operates through a deeply ingrained idea of a normalized and naturalized male identity. This normative identity is both an image and ideal that stands out as a symbol of societal norms and privileges that are institutionalized in the law. More specifically, Lorde wrote,

Lorde’s prevailing goal of the essay is to demonstrate that the marginalized should not nullify, ignore, suppress, or attack the expression of differences between themselves. Making yourself different from the rest of society is a huge step to take in life. There are many risks that come with being different, especially judgement from others. Even with that being said, writers like Audre Lorde, and a poor fellow described in Judith Butler’s, ”phylosophe”, behaved differently than the way their society allowed them to because it is who they are.
