The Louisiana Purchase formed both negative and positive impacts for President Jefferson and the expansion of the United States; dealing with both agricultural and economic reasons. On April 30th, 1803 the United states representatives paid fifteen million dollars to the French for over eight-hundred-twenty-eight-thousand square miles of their territory. This segment of land stretched from the Mississippi river to Rocky Mountains, and also from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. Both negative views of the Louisiana purchase reflected ill on President Jefferson.

After buying Louisiana US. doubled its size. Louisiana added about 820000 sq. miles to the US. Causes France desperately needed money for war with the Great Britain. The US was interested in buying New Orleans(part of Louisiana) for $10 million.

The United States history would be different if we had not purchase the Louisiana Territory because Jefferson Louisiana Purchase had more than doubled the size of the United States and had abandoned then his philosophy of the strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. If this did not happen then the United States may have not become America and it would have happened later. The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States and the cost of it. The buying of the Louisiana even before it could happen we the Americas were having issues with Spanish because they didn’t want us to ship goods into New Orleans and It got the westerns mad and they wanted to go back to war for their rights. The Louisiana Purchase is arguably one of the best decisions a president has ever made for the United States, although it caused a lot of controversy. It also was a lot of work and was extremely rushed due to fear that France would retract their offer at any time. The purchase caused President Jefferson a lot of mental agony, but in the end it was definitely worth it. Without the purchase of the land we would not be the great country that we are today. Then, in October 1803 the United States ratified the treaty and purchase and the land was transferred from France powers to the United States. The United States paid just a mere $15 million dollars for all of the land. That’s less than three cents per acre of land. This is arguable one of the best purchases America ever made for itself.

America was then opened up to many more riches to help their economy. This could also comprise of the new land that could be used for farming of many different plants and foods. So, not only did the territory grow so did the wealth in natural resources.

The Louisiana Purchase opened a window of opportunity to the Americans, as the purchase expanded the nation further west. Evidently, the purchase of this land mass created a need for new technology and transportation. As the United States started to expand, gaining alliance with the most powerful forces on the planet, business and influence started to flourish. New Orleans became the most diverse place in the country both socially and politically.

In 1802 Spain again blocked the United States for passing goods through New Orleans again. President Thomas Jefferson, at the time, had concerns about this since this was not the first time Spain restricted usage of New Orleans. Under the Jefferson administration, the United States became aware of the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso which said that Spain would give back the Louisiana Territory back over to the French. This sparked major concern; based on the history France and their aggression over territory, this was considered a threat to the US western border. (Dictionary of American History 2003) This was an attributing factor that identified the need for the United States to purchase the port city of New Orleans.
