Task 3 – Good Versus Evil (draft)

Good morning/afternoon, today I will be discussing in depth a theme from the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare. The theme I am exploring today is good versus evil. Everyone is capable of doing good and evil things. The main character Macbeth portrays the theme good and evil. At the beginning of the play he is a heroic soldier, but as the play continues he executes various people to gain and maintain power, therefore displaying evil traits. He is fundamentally a good person but he’s corrupted by his desire for power.

Good versus evil is one of the most vital themes in the play. Characters who displayed good traits in the beginning are more evil towards the end. The theme is important in relation to the play because it’s based around the concept of evil; therefore the play is dark and foul. This has an effect on the audience because people appreciate evil characters, as they can relate with them. The audience finds it interesting that the evil characters don't have the same morals that most people have. Evil characters also provide more action and drama to the scene so the audience is drawn to the excitement that they introduce to the story line. …show more content…

For an Elizabethan audience, the drama was around the fact that Macbeth had committed a major crime against God in disrupting the Divine Right of Kings. Kings and queens at this time were believed to be chosen by God, so Macbeth and his wife were interfering with God's plan. They related to this, as they were very religious at the time. The Roman Catholic Church was under attack and the movement against it was known as reformation.
