Shakespeare likely wrote Macbeth in the early 17th century. Macbeth is a character driven play that emphasises the attributes of the characters in the play. The newest adaption was directed by Justin Kurzel, which showed a more realistic and brutal Macbeth. Kurzel kept true to most of the source material, but changed a few scenes to make Macbeth a darker and scarier person. In this adaptation Kurzel brings Macbeths brutality to another level compared to the play. He does this by showing the escalation of his tyranny and brutal nature. The key parts of the film that shows this is the murder of Duncan, his hallucination on the news of Banquo and the execution of Macduffs family.
After the witches prophecies are given to both Macbeth and Banquo, Macbeth starts thinking of the

Kurzel changed the way they die. He made into a very brutal and surprising action ever done by Macbeth himself. In the play Macbeth sends mercenaries to attack Fife and kill Macduff and his family. Not knowing that Macduff had left and has taken most of his warriors he left his family unprotected and they ended up being slaughtered. In the adaptation the mercenaries capture his family and to bring them to Macbeth himself. After Macbeth ties the family on wooden poles Lady Macduff starts calling Macbeth a tyrant king, at that point he sets them all on fire. In the play he was never present for the execution, but in this adaptation the director made Macbeth personally there to commit the third great crime himself. The news of this brutal deed reached Macduff enraged him to the point where he swore that by his blade Macbeths head will fall and he will purge the tyrant king.
In conclusion Kurzel showed the brutality of Macbeth in stages from the first great crime which is the killing of Duncan, the second crime which is the assassination of Banquo and third the crime that led to his downfall the fiery execution of Macduffs
And thence it is,/That I to your assistance do make love,/Masking the business from the common eye/For sundry weighty reasons”(3.1.121-129). This shows that Macbeth will kill his partner to stay king since Banquo thinks Macbeth is the murder of King Duncan. After he hears the answers from the witches, he decides to kill all of Macduff’s family because Macbeth thinks killing Macduff’s family would stand in line of his inheritance:”The castle of Macduff I will surprise,/Seize upon Fife, give to th' edge o' th' sword/His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls/That trace him in his line. No boasting like a fool./This deed I’ll do before this purpose cool./But no more sights!—Where are these gentlemen?/Come, bring me where they are”(4.1.157.163). Macbeth will orders the murders to kill anyone that can overtake his
There was a clear distinction between the book, Macbeth and the 2010 version of the movie, Macbeth, but there were also some similarities included, to prove that it was still Macbeth. In contrast with the book, the movie took place closer to the present, beginning with a civil war and men using weapons that corresponded with its time period, which was fair for an interpretation. Conversely, I felt as though it lost some of its charm, because I truly believed that I, along with every single person who had read Macbeth, would have envisioned the setting to take place in an older period of time.
In the Shakespearean tragedy, Macbeth, numerous murders take place. Throughout the play, the reader finds that each murder gets more and more evil, and more planned than the previous, thus leading to the downfall of Macbeth.
Macbeth was so focused on becoming king that he wanted to eliminate any threat that came his way. The three witches had warned him to watch out for Macduff, so Macbeth decided to kill him. Not knowing that Macduff had fled to England with Malcolm, Macbeth sent hired servents to go kill Macduff. When they realized that Macduff was not there, they decided to kill his family instead to prove the point that Macbeth is not afraid of Macduff. In the play, Macbeth is not present during the murder of Macduff’s family but in the movie he is. This was probably the biggest difference between the Macduff family murder in both versions of the story. Another big difference was that in the play when Ross told Macduff that his family had been viciously slaughtered, Macduff did not seem phased at all. He was not very upset, just a little mad. In the movie however, Macduff nearly dies himself when he hears the news that his family had been killed. They made it this way in the movie to make it more dramatic and suspensful to watch. Another major difference in this scene is that in the play, the son of Lady Macduff says “Thou liest, thou shag-haired villian!” (Macbeth 4.2.80). After he yells this at the murderer, the murderer stabs him to death. In the movie, the son never says this and it never shows him getting stabbed. The movie did this to give the audience a chance to envision what the murder was like on their own. The three big differences in the murder of Macduff’s family is Macbeth was part of the actual murder in the movie and not the play, Macduff does not get very emotional in the play but he does in the movie, and the movie does not show the son getting stabbed while the book
In the play ‘Macbeth’ written by William Shakespeare a dramatic scene in the play is act 3 scene 4. In this scene Macbeth and lady Macbeth hold a banquet with the royalty of Scotland. Macbeth hears news of Banquo’s murder and Fleance’s escape and is approached by Banquo’s ghost causing confusion within the guest and fear in Macbeth. Through the use of Language, irony, stage direction and the contrast between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Shakespeare is able to powerfully create dramatic scene.
Macbethsmiserable reign starts with immediate guilt. Macbeth kills the current King of Scotland, King Duncan. Macbeth feels guilt as soon as he commits the murder and is terrified that he will be caught and punished for his crime. “ How is’t with me when every noise appalls
For centuries, I feel that literature has moved readers and taught lessons that apply to everyday life. William Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth,” is no exception. I think that the play possesses many crucial themes that are relevant even within today’s modern society. A theme is an overall message the author wants readers to take away from their work. Macbeth’s powerful themes include that not everything is what it appears to be, that all of our actions have consequences and that fear compels us to do frightful deeds. I think that Shakespeare’s original play, filled with vivid descriptions and emotions, is more effective than the movie Macbeth (2015), in portraying these themes to today’s audiences.
Some actresses see Lady Macbeth as sympathetic to her husband like Sarah Siddons and Kate Fleetwood, feeling sympathy for Macbeth is a decision both actresses made for Lady Macbeth to be relatable and more human, Siddons who portrayed her in the mid-1800s said that she approached her as, “keen to present the character in as attractive a light as possible, so sexually appealing – fair feminine, nay perhaps even fragile” (Sarah Siddons qtd. In Robert Miola, 94). Siddons saw the character of Macbeth as honorable and to have him as a husband only proves Lady Macbeth is very taken with him, having put all of her efforts into seducing such an honorable man. Kate Fleetwood’s own interpretation of Lady Macbeth was very domestic, the societal hostess. In an interview in 2011, Fleetwood who was directed by her husband Rupert Goold in the 2007 version of the play said that, “When Rupert suggested to me about the domestic side of her, that started to ring really big bells for me” (Fleetwood qtd. In Miola, 135). The argument about how Lady Macbeth truly loves her husband and tried to summons the spirits is because she knows that Macbeth is very ambitious, and she needs all the strength she can have to convince him to act out the three witches’ prophecy. This arguement and its solution is very valid, Lady Macbeth only acting out for the benefit of her husband, she wants her husband to be the king of Scotland but it does not mean she wants to queen herself. In an interview, Fleetwood also
Macbeth is a story about murder and the spiral towards becoming mad with power. Macbeth, the story’s protagonist/antagonist, is told that he would receive great power and a title above all, the title of king. What macbeth is not told is how he would get this great power. Evententally after telling his wife she comes to the conclusion that she has to kill the current king Duncan. After Macbeth commits to the crime he’s crowned king and to remain king he kills off whoever could stands in his way even going to witches again only to be killed by what who they he would be killed by.
Macbeth better judgement is clouded by paranoia. This causing him to make reckless decisions. As a result of paranoia Macbeth becomes worrisome of Banquo because he was also there when the Three Witches gave the prophecy. Banquo even received his own prophecy from the Three Witches stating: “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.” (I.iii.70) meaning that his children are heir to the throne. This prophecy making Macbeth suspicious of Banquo, because he believes that Banquo knows that he killed King Duncan and that Banquo will try and come after the throne. Macbeth being so paranoid, he hires murderers to execute Banquo, but first Macbeth has to convince the murderers to do the deed. So he tells them: “who wrought with them; and all the things else that might to half a soul and to a notion crazed say, “Thus did Banquo.” (III.i.88-90) By Macbeth telling them he makes the murderers believe that it is Banquo’s fault for all of the misfortune in their lives. So soon after, the murder is committed, leaving Macbeth at some ease. However not a minute too soon, Macbeth becomes paranoid of Macduff. After the Three Witches inform him on yet another prophecy which is: “Macbeth! beware Macduff; beware the thane of Fife.” (IV.i.78-79) After hearing this Macbeth begins to think that Macduff is going to go after his title of king. Macbeth then sets out to kill Macduff but ends up finding his wife and
First, is the Movie Macbeth, in the beginning, Macbeth gets confonted by three evil witches that are just bad news. These witches tell Macbeth what he is, “Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis and then, The King herafter” (Casson, 1979). Which tells him he will be the king since the witches got the other two things right. Then Macbeth had to tell the information he got from the witches to his wife. Macbeth didn’t really want to kill King Duncan because he was like father to him, but by telling Lady Macbeth it persuaded Macbeth to kill King Duncan because he and she wanted the crown now. Lady Macbeth hosts a party with the king in her house and in the middle of the night she walks and takes a kitchen knife to stab King Duncan. This makes Malcolm and Donalbain flee to Ireland becuase their fauther, the king was killed. Then later on Macbeth kills his best friend Banquo because he knew to much and knew Macbeth had killed King Duncan, he then kills the wife and family of MacDuff to protect himself from losing the crown. Macbeth then goes back to the witches and asks them for help and they say “when Birnam Woods meets Dunsinane and someone not from woman
During this time, Lady Macbeth is deathly sick and with a doctor and her servant. Macbeth is getting ready for the fight. As he prepares his troops and sets up grounds for battle, he displays his nobility and courageousness. This is one of Macbeth’s primary traits. Macbeth has kept his character, but still, is corrupt with power. The fight has begun, and this is where the witches’ predictions come to fruition. Macduff and Macbeth are paired face to face. Macduff is filled with hate and has murder uppermost in his mind. As they fight, they exchange insults. Macbeth is killed. Back home, Lady Macbeth has died of a heavy heart. Macduff brings the English general Macbeths head. Good has won the battle, and Malcolm is the rightful heir to the throne, and is now king of
As seen with Macbeth’s fall from grace throughout the film, Kurzel reinforces that one’s fall is inevitable, and once fallen, there is no going back to the innocent state, and he is doomed to eternal hell, either on earth or in death. Despite initially having a completely rational motive for killing Duncan and Banquo, Macbeth’s temptation for power and greed, paired with his paranoia, overpowered his emotional ties to his family. Thus, Kurzel reveals that no one can truly have good intentions when going through a fall, the temptation for
Being fortunetellers makes it hard for people to believe you. These three sisters prophecies many different things throughout the play. They prophecies that Macbeth indeed does become king of Cawdor, in which case he does. Banquo believes these witches are legit, for now he wants what they prophesied him “May they not be my oracles as well.” He wants what he was promised.
All through the play Macbeth becomes obsessed with what the witches have for-told. He always follows this the obvious way. Macbeth thinks that he should kill Banquo because the witches say that there will be a line of Banquo kings. Macbeth doesn’t want to loose the crown to Banquo or his son, so he tries to kill them both so the line will continue in his family. Macbeth also chooses to kill Macduff anyway, even though the witches said know one would kill him. The witches did not really mislead Macbeth; they only put an idea into his head, and left him to decide what action to take. Banquo tries to warn Macbeth away from the prophecies.
