I am Macbeth. I am the vice-captain, but I still want more power, I want to be the captain, I want to be king. I always hope that Vernon would just fall off the stage and break his face, so I can take over his position and become king. Does this make me a villain? Or do I just want to improve my position in life?
Good morning fellow members of “Shakespeare reloaded”. My name is Oliver Phillips and I welcome you to today’s presentation of the exploration of one of Shakespeare’s famous plays, Macbeth. Was Macbeth a villain? Or was he a tragic hero who became a victim? A tragic hero is a great or worthy character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat (Tragic Hero , 2015). Macbeth is a complicated character,

Macbeth’s character had no desire to kill King Duncan it’s not until Lady Macbeth uses her female charm to manipulate helpless Macbeth, corrupting his innocence. With determination, she uses her skilful knowledge of manipulation and persuasion to get what she ultimately desires. When Lady Macbeth was aware of Macbeths prophecies she was full of joy, in fact she was so joyful that she began to eagerly and expertly plot the murder of King Duncan. Shakespeare has positioned the audience to witness Lady Macbeth willingly harness evil from within. When she informed Macbeth of her plan, he was hesitant, refusing to betray his King. However Lady Macbeth was fast to change his mind insulting his masculinity, by calling him a coward. “When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man.” (1.7.49-51). The audience is invited to see Macbeth as a victim rather than a villain because he never intended to kill King Duncan, “We will proceed no further in this business.” (1.7.31). It was Lady Macbeth’s own ambition and she used her female charm to emotionally manipulate and persuade Macbeth. He never wanted to betray his king, or his wife, he was a noble man who trusted his beloved wife. The audience has no choice but to view Macbeth as a victim. Macbeth wasn’t the cause of King Duncan’s death, with the …show more content…
The position of king was highest status any man can be granted during Shakespearean time. If you became aware of a prophecy, giving you a message that you can become king. Would you do as Macbeth did? Kill an innocent man to ensure the message came true? In the beginning of the play Macbeth is represented as a heroic soldier, who is noble, loyal and will fight for his King, this transformed when he was confronted by super natural practices. Macbeth was a weak character, he was easily persuaded and controlled by the three witches once they prophesised him becoming “Thane of Glamis!... Thane of Cawdor!... King Hereafter!” (1.3.149-51). This changed the man from heroic and noble, to a man who can be easily manipulated. Even though Lady Macbeth was the main influence towards Macbeth, there is no doubt that the witches were the roots of King Duncan’s death as well as Macbeth’s own ambitions. The audience have been positioned to view Macbeth as an innocent victim of powerful persuasion through the use of evil
Shakespeare presents Macbeth more extensively as a villain using methods which would be more understood in the era the play was composed, which was the Jacobean period, but influenced by the reign of Elizabeth. During the Elizabethan period people were preoccupied with the supernatural, which is one of the main topics in Shakespeare’s play. In my opinion Shakespeare structures the play to make the audience see Macbeth transforming from a hero into a villain, we can also see how Macbeth’s character transfigures from a valiant, noble soldier to a deceitful traitor.
Amongst all of Shakespeare's tragedies, Macbeth is the most inconsistent and fragmented. Like the mental state of the protagonist, the tragic structure of the play is in disarray from the very onset. According to Aristotle, all tragedies must follow a certain set of characteristics, and the most important of these is the presence of a tragic hero. This tragic hero must possess a tragic flaw, or hamartia, which is a good quality taken to such an extreme that it now exhibits immoral behaviour from the hero. He must also draw sympathy of his plight from the audience. Macbeth, although the protagonist, is not a tragic hero because he does not possess this hamartia. This significant absence of a flaw leads to his actions being without
As works of literature mature, the line between good and bad begins to become unclear. With Shakespeare’s works especially, things are usually not what they initially seem; a character may reveal to be the protagonist, antagonist, or even an anti-hero. A character may take actions that border on the antagonistic side, but still be the protagonist in which the audience is emotionally, though not always ethically, invested in. An anti-hero can be viewed simply as a protagonist who lies somewhere on the spectrum of villain and hero; never quite touching each end. In his play, Macbeth, Shakespeare makes it clear that Macbeth is really an anti-hero through his changing public appearance, his encounters with the witches, and his feelings concerning his own actions.
In William shakespeare’s Macbeth,Macbeth is a classic example of a tragic hero in shakesperean work.Macbeth display the major characteristics of a tragic hero throughout the play until his tragic end.The play potrays Macbeth as a lost cause by showing how he fell from being a honest and just man who fought for whats right, to a cruel, superstitious, ambicious dictator. In william shakespreares Macbeth,Macbeth is a tragic hero because he compromises his honor and negates his moral values in order to obtain power which results with lots of tragic events such as character deaths leading to his tragic end.
in all purity. This is mainly due to the fact that he was willing to
After hearing the prophecy that he will become king, Macbeth resolves to leave his future up to fate proving his pride and prestige are very important to him. Once he is told of Malcolm being named successor to the throne, Macbeth decides that if he is going to reach his goal he cannot leave it up to luck. Again Macbeth’s resolve to murder Duncan wavers when he leaves the grand banquet to assess his situation and decide whether he wants to proceed. His arguments include wishing to keep his honor and not kill Duncan for Duncan is there ‘in double trust’. Thus, Macbeth is shown to be clinging to his honor. Finally, Macbeth must stand his ground one last time against his wife who uses tact to emasculate Macbeth. In his final attempt to stop the whole ordeal before it can start Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that he does not want to ‘cast aside’ the honor he has just recently received. Unfortunately, Lady Macbeth will have none of what her husband is saying and so convinces Macbeth to follow through with his plan of murdering King Duncan. Hence, the audience is given the first example of how powerful selfish motives are and how quickly they can spread to others along with cause them to perform unthinkable
Macbeth’s desire to become king and take the crown from King Duncan ends up hurting him more than helping him. Initially, Macbeth was against murdering King Duncan and didn't think he could do that to his very own king. Lady Macbeth believes that her husband will not go through with his plan however he does end up killing him. She states “Yet I do fear thy nature; It is too full of of the milk of human kindness. As he kills the King he starts to see things like the floating dagger and that seems to make him extremely
Macbeth was an honorable warrior, content to be fighting to protect King Duncan and Scotland, Duncan though of Macbeth as one of the finest soldiers in the land fearing no man nor enemy that came his way. Macbeth being unsure of himself made him morally ambiguous he knew what he was doing was wrong but at the same time he wanted more power, respect,to please his wife that at the same time the murder of duncan didn't seem wrong. The murders that were planned by macbeth shows an evil persona taking upon him he wanted power,to be a great king macbeth didn't let anyone get in his way of achieving that goal even if it meant killing friends, families nothing mattered but the crown. We can’t blame Sir Macbeth for his behavior besides if you were promised, fame fortune, and everything that came with it what how far would you go to get
Macbeth’s ambition for power interests his wife, Lady Macbeth, who also desires power and corrupts Macbeth’s ambition. When Macbeth is having second thoughts as to whether or not he should murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth, coaxing him into killing King Duncan despite his loyal service to him;”When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man”(I.7.56-58). Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth’s manliness as a way to get Macbeth to go through with the murder. Macbeth, offended and hesitant, struggles with moral conflict. He fears being caught and does not wish to murder Duncan because he has been fair to him. Lady Macbeth however knows that Macbeth strives for power, and finds a way to use this as a way of manipulating him. Earlier on in the play, Lady Macbeth is reading her husband’s letter and learns of the prophecies. Her first instinct is to kill Duncan. She reads the letter and reflects on Macbeth’s nature,“Glamis thou art, and cawdor, and shalt be / What thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature; / It is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness”(I.5.15-17). Lady Macbeth knows that her husband does not have enough ambition to kill Duncan, and realizes she must push him into murdering King Duncan. [This is the moment in the play where Lady starts planning to murder King Duncan and gets the play moving in the direction it ends]. Macbeth’s thirst for power never leaves him satisfied.
A tragic hero is someone whos fatal flaw, combined with other external factors, bring about ones demise, which is demonstrated by Macbeth in Shakespeares play Macbeth. Macbeth is portrayed as a courageous, brave and noble man who was haunted by superstition and an overpowering ambition. Factors that contributed to the degeneration of Macbeth include the prophecies told to him by the witches, the influence and manipulation of his wife, Lady Macbeth, and finally, Macbeths deep driven intent to become king. Although seen as a daring and valiant hero at the beginning of the play, Macbeths evil desires and long time ambition causes his downfall. Even though Macbeth seems like a malevolent and murderous tyrant towards the end of the play, he
But despite Macbeth’s desire to take the throne, he does not want to kill Duncan. What pushes Macbeth over the edge is Lady Macbeth. She tells Macbeth to follow his ambitions and kill Duncan. She says that murdering Duncan is not a sin, and that it is all worth it for the crown. These words from Lady Macbeth’s mouth are what made Macbeth decide to follow through and commit murder. “I am settled and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat.” (1.7.92-93). Macbeth will do the act, but he is very reluctant to do so. In conclusion, Macbeth’s ambitions and his loyalty towards Lady Macbeth are huge factors for why Macbeth was torn, and why he decided to kill Duncan.
The biggest push that leads Macbeth into choosing to murder Duncan, is his belief in the witches prophecies. When the witches prophecy that Macbeth will become King, he doesn’t have very much concern of the evil that might come from this supernatural prophecy. “If ill, / why hath it given me earnest of success, / Commencing in a truth?” (1.3.8). The witches prophecy that Macbeth will be not only the thane of Glamis but also the thane of Cawdor. When this prophecy comes true, Macbeth conclusion is that the witches might be predicting the truth after all. Ultimately, this prophecy drives Macbeth to kill Duncan because he believes that the witches’ prophecy has to be fulfilled. He had the choice to let fate decide whether he would become king but he chooses to take
Throughout the story of Macbeth the main character, whom the story is named after, starts as a loyal and righteous soldier who quickly evolves into a power hungry, immoral murderer. In the beginning, three witches appear to Macbeth and Banquo promising the crown to Macbeth. The only problem with this prophecy is Macbeth does not just acquire the throne naturally he has people standing in his way that inhibit him from becoming King. At first, Macbeth is timid and moral while his wife tries to persuade him to kill for the crown, but as the story progresses he throws all of his previous ethics out the window and will do anything to become King. Although people do try and persuade Macbeth’s wretched decisions, he is ultimately in control
Throughout a variety of Shakespeare’s tragedies, the audience is presented with a protagonist who appears to be a “tragic hero” in the overall play. In other words, this character is one who has made an error in his judgement, providing that this error eventually leads to their own ruin or destruction. Within Macbeth, Macbeth the character is regarded as a tragic hero, but with the distinct and evident explanation of his evil and the succession of his acts of violence, it may not be as clear cut as to whether he is a tragic hero or not. Though Macbeth does commit an error that leads to his eventual destruction, he knows that his judgement is evil and he is aware of the nature of the deed that he wishes to commit in order to reach his ambitions. His knowledge of the nature of his thoughts and actions first appears after an incident he experiences with his imagination and in fact, imagination plays a big role in the motivating identity for his will to commit regicide. Imagination begins by acting as a self-contradicting identity by providing a form of motivation, but also contributing to some hesitation towards the murderous act. As the play progresses though, it becomes solely a motivating identity towards the evil that contributed to the deterioration of Macbeth, and it is this resulting torment that becomes evidence of what evil does onto Macbeth’s mind and heart.
The tragic hero has been a major storytelling tool in recent years that makes the audience relate to, respect, and feel sympathy for a character which is undone by the end of the story. But can this title be given to Macbeth, the titular hero of the Shakespeare play by the same name? Yes, absolutely- Shakespeare’s Macbeth follows this plot path in numerous ways. Throughout the play, we are introduced to Macbeth’s belovedness, the crushing of said established belovedness, and his own undoing.
