Macbeth's Tragic Downfall in William Shakespeare's Macbeth Essay

In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the character Macbeth descends into madness. Macbeth’s descent into madness first started with the witch’s prediction. If he had never met the witches none of this trouble would have occurred.

William Shakespeare’s play entitled Macbeth is a bloody tragedy about ambition, evil, guilt and moral corruption. The story emphasizes a lot on the consequences or aftermath of the bad deeds that Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth do and the growing impact it has on them in turn. Lady Macbeth a woman driven by her assertiveness, boldness, strength and ambition for her husband could not escape the guilt that eventually caught up to her and destroyed her. In Act 5 scene 1, Lady Macbeth is sleep walking and goes insane due to the guilt and remorse that finally catches up to her. This scene is the most important because it changes the reader’s view on Lady Macbeth and Macbeth as characters and it also

By the beginning of the third act, Macbeth has become king. However, he does not feel secure in his kingdomship. He is afraid of losing is crown, especially because the witches had previously prophesied that Banquo’s children were to become kings. This fear and desire to have power that comes from within Macbeth, drives him to have Banquo and Fleance -Banquo’s son- to be killed. Not only did he make this terrible decision himself but he never consulted his wife. When he does eventually mention his decision to her, he says to her “Be innocent of the knowledge dearest chuck, till thou applaud the deed…” (Mac.III.ii. 45-46). This is showing that he is no longer being influenced by his wife and that she has no power of the actions that he takes.

There were many wrongs committed in "MacBeth." But who should bear the major responsibility for these actions? The witches' prophesising? Lady MacBeth's scheming and persuasion? Or should MacBeth himself be held responsible? No doubt the witches and lady MacBeth influenced MacBeth in the course of action he took in his rise to power, but ultimately he must bear the major responsibility for his fate.

In every great play there is always a character that has a dramatic downfall which causes the audience to look at that character differently. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Lady Macbeth’s character undergoes some pretty defying changes that makes the readers question whether or not she still obtains her sanity. The play begins with Lady Macbeth living a good life with her husband, the Thane of Cawdor - Macbeth. Once her and Macbeth saw the an open window to become King and Queen of Scotland, that is when everything began to fall. From Lady Macbeth urging to kill Duncan when Macbeth did not want to, sleepwalking around the castle claiming there was blood on her hands, and being to guilt stricken that is drives her to take her own life.

William Shakespeare is the noted author of a vast array of plays, ranging from comedies to histories to tragedies. Perhaps one of his most famous in the tragedy genre is Macbeth. Though Shakespeare can be considered as a scholar in the sense that he was both a renowned and prolific playwright, look back a few hundred years to find Aristotle, one of the most famous scholars and philosophers of all time. In his treatise titled Poetics, he defends poetry against criticism as well as sets standards for tragedies in "The Nature of Tragedy," a section of the Poetics. Is Macbeth fit to be included in the tragedy genre according to the standards set by Aristotle?

William Shakespeare had tragedy in Macbeth. Macbeth had been a Thane, which is a noble. Lady Macbeth wants to be Queen of Scotland in Macbeth wants to be king no matter what it takes Macbeth was going be king an Lady Macbeth was going to be queen. Lady Macbeth was a very strong mind person. Lady Macbeth surfed the effect of bipolar and schizophrenia.

    Macbeth is victorious; he has just returned from the battle ground as a brutal warrior; courageous, but what is more, heroic.  At this point in the play, Macbeth's reputation is rapidly growing with the rampant spread of the word of his good deeds at war.  This climaxes when his actions are acknowledged and rewarded by the title given to him by King Duncan,

Although William Shakespeare is not historically accurate with his play Macbeth, there are many possible reasons as to why his historical interpretation differs from reality. He may have wished to flatter the king and, when taken into historical context, may have wished to warn others of the fate handed to those who would oppose the king. Although there are many differences between the play and history, Shakespeare remains truthful in some aspects, making his play as unique as the history that inspired it.

As Macbeth was of good reputation at the beginning, Lady Macbeth obviously plays a large role in his downfall, using his weaknesses to manipulate him into the murder of the king. From the start it is clear that Macbeth would never commit regicide without external influences, hailed as “brave”( 1, 2, 16), “noble”( 1, 2, 67), “valiant”( 1, 5, 54), and “a peerless kinsman”( 1, 5, 58). Before the events of the play, he “brandish’d steel”( 1, 2, 17) against a traitor for the king, and “unseam’d him from nave to th’chaps and fix’d his head upon [the] battlements”( 1, 2, 22-23). Before she hears of the king’s arrival, Lady Macbeth herself bemoans his good character:

The iconic tragedy Macbeth is arguably one of the most recognised literary works of William Shakespeare, centered on the idea of illegitimate power. Throughout the text, Shakespeare explores the destructive nature of power through various representations and characters, conveying an unceasing struggle for power amongst the main protagonists that causes devastating consequences. Though Shakespeare conveys many different representations regarding the nature of power and the way it operates throughout Macbeth, in particular he represents power as a divine right with which one should not tamper, in order to avoid disaster. Written during the seventeenth century when belief in a divine-ordained hierarchy prevailed, this representation of illegitimate power acted as the driving force of the play and distinctly reflects certain socio-cultural views of the era. It was thought during this time that if monarchial power was gained through illegitimate means, destruction of the mind and state would result; Shakespeare foregrounds the idea that if one does indeed tamper with the divinity of power, the resulting control will be fleeting. This interpretation subsequently allowed the audience to anticipate Macbeth’s usurper of the Scottish throne to ultimately lead to a collective pain, loss and suffering.
