What is it that teens look for in a lyrical artist? Perhaps it's someone they find they can relate to through life experiences; such as partying, addiction, suicidal fantasies, family issues, or political and social views. One example of this would be a rising artist that goes by Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) who mostly talks about how corrupt and twisted our government and society as a whole really is in a way that catches the listener's attention through catchy beats and witty, snied lyrics that undercut today's “socially acceptable” views. Then again it they might just love the energy the young artists have when on stage when there running back and fourth, stage diving, and doing overly rehearsed dance moves. They tell the most elegant yet sometimes horrifying stories known to man leaving a message imbedded deep in its DNA by the author. They have the power to make you contemplate your existence and what the true meaning of life is, start a party, make you for lack of a better word sad, energetic, or even angry. They can bring out the truth in society and strike a spark that ignites a revolution tearing apart an entire nation and then that same day rebuild the desolate world around it. Early in his career Malcolm wrote mostly party songs during his early career such as “Party on 5th Ave.” and “Freak Park Market” which would get the listener in the mood to more or less want to party through lyrics like “I'm f*****d up off weed and booze party and sleep till noon, what everyday people do give me a week or two see me when you read the news my b*****s don't sleep till noon my rhyme time is why, my album is fly your favorite record, you gonna put it aside this that old school s**t soundin’ good in the ride and f**k ten I’m only countin’ to nine said this that old school s**t, soundin’ good in the ride said let’s head out to the party I’ll drive” (Mac Miller, Party on 5th Ave.). Some people might assume that Malcolm is trying to portray the idea that this is how parties by getting twisted (drunk and high) partying all night and then sleeping in so he can do it again, and that his music is what you should be pushing through your speakers when you have your parties. As time went on his music began to change into a more mature sound and some of this is due to his battle with depression, anxiety and drugs brought on by becoming famous at such a young age and the loss of his childhood friend. He demonstrates this through songs like “The Star Room”, “Red Dot Music”, and “Apparition”.
