The major ethical issue that I find with advertising for lotteries is the fact that the government is encouraging people to essentially throw their money away. Winning the Powerball jackpot with a single ticket is 1 in 175 million. Stakeholders are anyone who walks into a store like BI-LO and is having a particularly lucky day. They have heard about the Powerball lottery and how much the current jackpot is. I have seen stakeholders religiously spend $100 each week on Powerball tickets and who knows if this waste of thousands of dollars was brought on by advertising.
