His Father was a local leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and his mother served as secretary and "branch reporter", sending news of local UNIA activities to Negro World, a weekly newspaper established in New York, they inculcated self-reliance and black pride in their children. Because of Ku Klux Klan threats his family relocated in 1926 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and shortly thereafter to Lansing, Michigan. In late 1938, Malcolm’s mother was sent to a mental hospital after she had a nervous breakdown, which resulted in Malcolm and his siblings going to a foster home.
