The Mandate of Heaven (Tianming), which is the concept of legitimatizing a dynasty after it has conquered a previous dynasty, is a very interesting subject. Although I have studied Chinese history and have heard of the Mandate of Heaven the detail surrounding it origins eluded me. The Zhou dynasty which defeated the Shang dynasty used the Mandate of Heaven as a way to legitimize their reason for attacking the village/kingdom. There was some discussion about the last King of Shang being corrupt, unfair, and unvirtuous. He was a killer of virtuous ministers. Basically calling the last King of Shang a tyrant, dictator and every horrible thing one can think of even a cannibal. But this account of the last Shang King was written by the Zhou leaders and it stands to …show more content…
Tianming was a way of explaining why a dynasty that had been strong and prosperous is suddenly downtrodden and suffering corruption. Why it was necessary for the failing dynasty to be overthrown. It is interesting that the Mandate can only be used after the previous dynasty has been successfully overthrown. Although the Zhou overthrew the Shang, their dynasties still had many common elements. They both relied on the spiritual world and their deceased ancestors to dictate how they should handle their earthly affairs. The was still a tie between the heavenly world and the earthly realm, so much so that it decided which dynasty had the right to rule. Difference lie in the fact that there are more written records of the Zhou and a reader can see that not only the king and nobles follow ancestor worship. In the Shang, the turtle shells mostly came from the upper families like the King and noble houses. In the Zhou, the written come from the King to the common people. The Zhou also used different ways of divination. It is apparent that like the Shang, the Zhou was a bronze, warrior driving
China during the classical period, a span of time stretching from 1000 B.C.E.-500 C.E., was ruled by many families, each having their own dynasty. The very first dynasty of this period was the Zhou, coming into power after overthrowing the Shang. The last Shang emperor, Di Xin, had essentially abandoned matters of the state in favor of hedonistic activities, using tax money to fund them and therefore becoming very unpopular. This caused the Zhou uprising which led to the establishment of the Mandate of Heaven, a concept that not only allowed the Zhou to gain and maintain cultural power of the Chinese people, but led to widespread notions in Chinese society of the validity of autocracy and a need for extremely centralized government that would
Selections from the Shu Jing (The Classic of History) (6th Cent. BC) is a document that was written by the Confucius. The classic of history is one of the Confucian classics, and it's was written during the Zhou era when Yi yin looked forward in constructing a young king into a better king with knowledge of the mandate of heaven the mandate of Heaven. The article is about the emperors who had different techniques of dealing the situations and showing their care for the people of the dynasty. For example, the first Xia's king was generous and kind to people while the king of Shang was cruel to his people. Besides, it's about how the mandate of heaven began back then and how people become to know about the mandate of
Throughout pre-unification China, the Mandate of Heaven was used as a justification in the acquisition and eradication of dynasties. The Mandate of Heaven, the idea that a ruler reigned only with the blessing of the heavens, was seen as a way to legitimize a dynasty and its ruler. Although it may seem as if a heavenly mandate gives a ruler absolute power, this is actually not the case. Instead, Mencius, a philosopher who emphasizes benevolent governance, asserts that a ruler can both acquire and lose the heavenly mandate based on his behavior and the treatment of his subjects. If a ruler is not equitable, in other words, the Mandate of Heaven can be withdrawn and bestowed upon a more qualified ruler. Thus, although the mandate sounds
The "Mandate of Heaven," actually mirrors the rulers of Chinaand shows that things could be poor and the people would take things into their own hands and rebel. These were rulers that led to the decline of the state of China. The Qin dynasty unified China for a short period of time, but then collapsed. The Han, (earlier) dynasty lasted several centuries, and then was replaced by the reign of Wang Mang, then the later Han dynasty took over. In the end, none of these dynasties could unify all of China.
The Counsel of Heaven on Earth is a book written by Ian F. Jones on the topic of Christian counseling. Jones makes sure to let his readers know that this book is not meant to be a guide for Christian counseling; he in no way means to advocate a particular methodology, system, or school of thought. Instead, Jones is “[trying] to identify and explain the essential features of Biblical Christian counseling. No attempt has been made to engage in formal theory building or to develop systematically any counseling strategies or techniques. [His] intention is to show how the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, provides counselors with the blueprint for developing an effective counseling ministry”.

Although both of Mencius and Xun zi acquired knowledge from Confucian school, they were not in agreement on “Tian”. In Spring and Autumn period, Xun zi held the opinion that heaven ran regularly and it did not exist or cease to exist for the sake of anybody. (Chan 1963) What’s more, Xun zi thought that human could try to analyzing the regularity of heaven. Once people mastered it, they would gain greatly. They could play an active role in their live and make a use of the regularity for the benefit of human beings. (Janghee 2005)
Shang-Ti also regulated human affairs as well as ruling over the material universe. This dual function would, in the Chou dynasty, be attributed to a more abstract figure, "t'ien," or "Heaven." The Shang also believed that their ancestors dwelled in heaven after their death and continued to show an interest in their familiy and descendants. The obligations within the family included, therefore, the ancestors. Failing in one's duties to the ancestors could bring all sorts of disaster on a family. All of these divine and semi-divine figures, from Shang-Ti to a family's ancestors, were sacrificed to. However, we know little of the nature or the frequency of these sacrifices. We do know, however, that in the Chou dynasty only the king could sacrifice to Shang-Ti; it is highly likely that Shang-Ti was the "local god" of the Shang kings who was subsequently elevated in order to elevate the Shang themselves. The one disturbing fact of Shang sacrifice is that it certainly involved humans; slaves and prisoners of war were often sacrificed by the hundreds when a king died. Lesser numbers were sacrificed at the founding of a palace or temple. F. Major reasons for decline and fall: 2.
