In 1934, after being lost for five hundred years, Colonel Butler-Bowden found a copy of The Book of Margery Kempe in his library. This is the only copy in existence of what is largely considered the first autobiography written in English. Although, there are debates about whether the book should be classified as an autobiography or if it should be an autohagiography, or something else altogether. The Book of Margery Kempe details the life of Margery Kempe, an English lay-woman in the later Middle Ages. She was a female mystic, who was known for her public displays of piety, and was well travelled and well versed in the religious world. The creation of the text, as well as the contents, have been the cause of many debates regarding authorship, …show more content…
Her first scribe died before the completion of the text, as he was terminally ill. The sections of The Book of Margery Kempe that had been completed in his hand were so messy the new scribe took over three years to decipher it. This original part became book one. In the second book the scribe becomes more of a coauthor to Margery, his voice is discernable from hers. John Hirsch attempted to determine which parts belonged to Margery’s voice and which parts to her scribe’s. When the text was completed a five page ‘proym’ was added to the beginning. Here it describes the structure of the text, which is not in chronological order, the proem stating, “Lych as þe mater cam to þe creatur in mend whan it schuld be wretyn, for it was so long er it was wretyn þat sche had for-getyn þe tyme & þe ordyr whan thyngys befellyn. And þerfor sche ded no þing wryten but þat sche knew rygth wel for very trewth." This was emphasized to dispel confusion due to the different scribes and, as Uhlman argued, the second scribe did not want the lack of order to result in disbelief over the content of the text or to be taken as a sign of
Its reliability remains a central concern of historians and biographers with her Book, since she began recording her divine encounters almost twenty years after they began. Also, since Margery was illiterate, she dictated her work to a priest, who may have altered her words and doctrines to make them more acceptable and in tune with the religious beliefs of the time.
It is very difficult to know the intentions of the writers of the texts, especially on Rowlandson’s case because the versions we have, although were written by herself, were also edited and revised by some Puritans Reverends and the real intentions are lost. However there are some ideas that can be found on the cover page, under the title when she says that it is “written by her own hand, for her private use” but lately published after some friends’ requests “for the benefit of the afflicted.” Those types of texts, catalogued within the captivity narrative genre, are “valuable documents charting our literary and cultural history” (Derouninan-Stodola, 253).

The atrocities that the Jews were subjected to during the World War ll are by far the most unjust and unjustifiable crimes in human history. Ellie Wiesel’s testimony is heartbreaking. Seeing Auschwitz’s camp through Elie's eyes is very different from seeing it in any other way. It still seems unbelievable that an entire nation was sentenced to death just because they did not have blue eyes and blond hair. The cruelty that was used to remove the jews from their homes is terrifying. Additionally, removing their identities and dehumanizing them were steps in confining the Jews to a faith that resembles animals waiting to be slaughtered. Finally, the killing that is happening day and night in the gas chambers is beyond the most disturbing and scary

The Mahele of 1848 was a time where foreigners could buy and sell land, supposedly for the goodness of Hawaiians. According to Richard Borreca of the Star-Bulletin, many of the foreigners believed that if the Hawaiians were to own land, they would give up their lazy and ignorant ways. However, the natives were new to this concept, and outsiders were the only people who had money. Therefore, the foreigners were the people who bought certain regions of Hawaii. This means that the Mahele was beneficial to foreigners because it gave them the right to own land as well as a more efficient way of producing sugarcane.

The Mahele, or “land division started in 1848 when Kamehameha divided the land among himself the other ali’is and the maka’ainana (Cachola). This happened because Kamehameha III didn’t want foreigners take over Hawai’i like they did with Tahiti. Kamehameha III also made the Mahele so the foreigners could purchase some of Hawaii's land. The Mahele went downhill once the foreigners started taxing and buying the land that the Hawaiians lived on (Kuloku). Therefore, the Mahele was unjustified because the foreigners stole the Hawaiians land, there were no timber to cook and build, and the land agents only communicated with the Hawaiians.
