Marion Jones, Former World Champion
A former world champion track and field athlete from 1992-2007, and a former professional basketball player who played 47 games for the Tulsa Shock, Marion Jones has won 3 gold medals and 2 bronze medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, making her the first woman to win five track-and-field medals at a single Olympics. However, she admitted to using banned substances and subsequently returned the medals. Marion Jones has said that she has been using a steroid called the tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), or commonly known as “the clear”, since 1999. With this, her career, reputation, endorsement, and her freedom was lost.
Marion Jones has let the public know her usage of “the clear” since 1999 in 2007. She has also gone to jail for 6 months for using

According to evolutionary.org, THG is most known for being associated with the Olympics and professional athletes, and specifically the BALCO scandal. As stated by Steve Sim, “the clear increases lean muscle, increases strength, faster recovery and reduces catabolism”. Another positive effect on the body is reduced muscle catabolism or breakdown of muscle following intense exercise which aids muscle development. Although there are positive outcomes, there are many negative consequences that follow. Any time an athlete is using an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS), they can expect suppression of the pituitary glands. You will have increased aggression, irritability, and mood swings. A development of over-sized mammary glands can occur in males. Furthermore, a decrease in libido from elevated prolactin, would be very possible. An increase in blood pressure, heart strain, and other organ strain would of been very common after taking the THG. Other side effects when a female takes THG is virilization, which includes enlarged clitoris, deepening voice, and facial
When I was a child, reading meant a magical story that I believed would come true when I grew up. Reading today is antithetic to how it was back in my childhood days. Having a want to read, meant that the library would become my best friend. As a child, my parents wanted me to stay active, which meant I was either at a ball tournament, camping, playing outside, or playing games with my friends, but I made sure I read before bed or on my way to and from ball games. When I was in preschool and elementary school my favorite books to read were The Rainbow Fish and the Junie B. Jones series. The Rainbow Fish was my favorite book because I remember seeing the cover of the book with all its vibrant colors that drew me to read it, which looking at the pictures were good enough for my attention span. Junie B. Jones book series were my favorite in grade school because I could relate Junie B. Jones life because I was the same age going through the same issues. The series was popular for children my age at our school, which we made a competition of who can read all the books first.
Steroids have a long-term, negative effect on the human body. These effects range from cardiovascular problems to mental and psychological issues such as rage and anger problems. Steroid use has been linked to increased alcohol consumption, marijuana use, cigarette smoking, and narcotic use (Buckman, Farris & Yusko, 2013). Many athletes may not be aware of the lasting effects steroids can have because all they are worried about is their performance, not their health.
Another effect from steroid use is health problems. They are high blood pressure and heart disease, liver damage and cancer, kidney and prostate problems and increased risk of ruptured tendons… acne and hair loss, as well as gender-specific problems: atrophy of the testicles, reduced sperm count and the growth of breasts in men; the growth of body hair, deeper voice and menstrual problems in women… altered moods, depression and "roid rage", hallucinations, paranoia and anxiety. In adolescents, they can stunt growth by signaling the body
Steroid.org noted only two external side affects (balding, changes in skin) and noted only the following 11 internal changes: Psychic, Feminization, Cardiovascular, Gynecomastia, Growth Deficits, Headaches, Kidney problems, Liver problems, Immune system, Impotence, and Stomachaches. Which all may seem bad but are less of a threat to athletes than most prescribed allergy medicines. The article even goes on to admit, the biggest factor leading to negative side affects is misuse. A regulated and informed usage policy would be very beneficial to the game as well as the athletes themselves.
Later it was discovered that anabolic steroids could facilitate the growth of skeletal muscle which led to abuse by bodybuilders, weightlifters, and athletes in other sports. Abuse of anabolic steroids can cause acne, breast development in men, heart attacks, and liver cancer. Most side effects are reversible if the abuser stops taking the drugs, but some are permanent, such as voice deepening in females. Possible health consequences for men are infertility, shrinking of the testicles, and male-pattern baldness while with women enlargement of the clitoris, and excessive growth of body hair can happen. It can affect the musculoskeletal & cardiovascular system, liver, skin, cause infection, and have psychiatric effects such as rage, aggression, mania, and delusions. Treatment of anabolic steroid abuse uses medications to restore the hormonal system after its disruption, and medication to target specific withdrawal symptoms.

Steroids come with three different types of risks/side effects that include: mental health, addictive potential and physical dangers. Steroids have immediate effects on the brain of a user as soon as they begin taking them. As soon as steroids are introduced into the user’s system, they “[bind to the] androgen (male sex hormone) and estrogen (female sex hormone) receptors on the surface of a cell.” Studies have suggested that “steroids may contribute to psychiatric dysfunction, paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility” (“NIDA InfoFacts: Steroids (Anabolic-Androgenic)”, 2009). These mental side effects also contribute to the growing narcissistic nature of steroid users, where they feel invincible, that no one is better than them, or
Users have different reasons for doping and, subsequently, steroids have different health consequences. Some common side effects from steroid use are the following: acne, genital changes, water retention, yellowing of the eyes and skin; women may experience: male-pattern baldness, decreased breast size, deeper voices, hairy bodies, and menstrual irregularities; men may experience: reduced sperm production, shrinking of the testicles, impotence, difficulty or pain in urinating, baldness, and irreversible breast enlargement. But these are just minor setbacks right? One could say that, like those aren’t bad, but researchers have also linked steroid abuse to much more serious risks such as: fatal liver cysts, liver cancer, blood clotting, cholesterol changes, hypertension, stroke, and even heart attack. Despite all these potential problems, many still choose to take steroids.
Corey Jones, a graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in Business Administration and Music, was so passionate about drumming that he organized monthly jam sessions where dozens of musicians from all over South Florida would come to the Bible Church of God and play gospel music—and sometimes a little R&B well into the night. By day, he worked as a public housing inspector and also mentored at My Brother’s Keeper, an organization for black youth, according to his LinkedIn Page. Jones carried a gun for protection because he hauled expensive drumming equipment during his gigs and would be paid in cash. Jones had both a permit and a concealed weapons permit.

The baby boomer generations started in 1943-1960 after world war two and the traditionalist felt safe they were able to have more babies than any other generation yet. They had so many newborn babies that a baby was born every nineteen seconds. This was the first time that mothers where able to enjoy their children and not have to worry about whether or not they could support them or that war would get in the way of a good living. There is also the idea that the baby boom was the result of the economy wanting to build up the number of its people so that they would be prepared for any war to come (Zemke, 2000).
"I am sorry for disappointing you all in so many ways." This drug unfairly enhanced her performance on the track but, didn't allow her to recover from her normal workouts like she used to. She used tetrahydrogestrinone, also known as THG which is a powerful anabolic steroid. Many track athletes and runners have been caught using it. The biggest consequence is is perhaps not even getting the medals taken away, but the disappointment and sadness from friends, family, and coaches that believed in her. America cheered for her in the Olympics. By using steroids she let America down. Not to mention drug use is against the law. Marion Jones was sentenced to 6 months in

It’s not everyday that you find a personal training company that’s committed to more than just fitness. GYMGUYZ in Barrington and Northbrook, IL are proud to announce that they’re sponsoring Tom Jones – the well known athlete and activist – on a stand-up paddle board trip from the coast of California to the golden shores of Hawaii. What’s more, the event is to raise awareness about The Ocean Cleanup Project and the Single Use Plastic Campaign, which are both initiatives to remove over five trillion pieces of trash from the Pacific Ocean that lies in between the West Coast and the Aloha State.
“Some athletes take a form of steroids — known as anabolic-androgen steroids or just anabolic steroids — to increase their muscle mass and strength. The main anabolic steroid hormone produced by your body is testosterone. Testosterone has many risks some of them are Anabolic effects promote muscle building. Androgenic effects male traits, such as facial hair and a deeper voice. Men get some major risks from taking this type of drug like some are prominent breasts Baldness, Shrunken testicles, Infertility, and Impotence.”(Mayo Clinic)
