Some of the most riveting books in not just American literature but in all of history, was written by this famous author. Twain, an American writer, is one of the major authors of American fiction. Also, he is considered the greatest humorist in American literature (Alan Gribben, np). Mark Twain was influenced by the society’s conditions he lived in, hence the incorporation of much of it in his writing.

The late psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross said: “The most beautiful people I’ve known are those who have known trials, have known struggles, have known loss, and have found their way out of the depths.” This inspirational quote suggests that adversity provides people with new opportunities and can drive people to improve their life. Adversity comes in numerous forms, such as emotional, physical, and financial. Individuals have a choice to learn from adversity or allow it to break their character. However, certain types of adversity, such as severe chronic conditions or diseases, do little to improve character and the human condition. War poetry displays an accurate representation of the sensations felt during the horrid times of battle. In the novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, D.B. asks Allie, “who was the best war poet, Rupert Brooke or Emily Dickinson” (140). The question proposed can be answered with many different opinions, as the individual's knowledge and understanding of each poet will impact their decision. In contrast to Rupert Brooke, Emily Dickinson is clearly the superior war poet as she portrays soldiers and the idea of death in an insightful manner, which causes the reader to go beyond their comprehension of the words to recognize the full potential of the poem.

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson is one of the best poets in America. She is known for her uncommon way of writing poetry. There was a great deal of problems going on in her life. She spent mostly her entire life living in her home and only left unless she needed to do so. Unlike other poets, she did not have any order to her writings. She just wrote what she was feeling. Her work was anonymously published and later became known after her death.

Since the emergence of written history, many fables regarding war have encompassed a significant portion of prosodic literature. Two of the foremost war poets of the 19th and 20th century—Emily Dickinson and Rupert Brooke—have both written about profound implications of war on society and also upon the human spirit albeit in two very different styles. In summation, Emily Dickinson is a superior war poet for her incisive analysis of death, and human nature in correspondence to war as compared to the patriotic salvos of Rupert Brooke’s poetry.

In Mark Twain’s “The Diaries of Adam and Eve,” Adam first struggled with the existence of his new life partner Eve. He hated the fact that he never had alone time, and the fact that Eve was starting to name all the animals in the garden. Matters worsened when they had kids. However, near the end of the reading, Adam begun to realize that Eve enriched his life in a way that he never knew before. Adam, in return, also enriched Eve’s life. The two found happiness together where they normally would not find it alone. The pair’s relationship shows the core idea of forsaking solitude and peace for something more, the companionship and joy of others.

Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous American poets. She wrote many poems throughout her lifetime, but it was not until after her death that she became famous. She wrote about death and life, love and separation, and God. She wrote about topics like these because she was inspired by the experiences in her life. Throughout her life, she dealt with problems that caused her to seclude herself, wear only a while dress, and write poems. Many have questioned what caused her seclusion? What happened that was so devastating to make her want to be alone all the time? Why did she always wear white?

Steve Jobs advised students that, “Your time is limited, so don 't waste it living someone else 's life. Don 't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people 's thinking. Don 't let the noise of other 's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition...” (“You’ve Got to Find What You Love”). Job explains to the Graduates of the Stanford Class of 2005, that in order to be successful one must assert their unique personality, one must stand up for what they believe in, and one must create their own perspective of the world. In life, a choice has to be made, to take a stand for what you think is right, or sit passively and listen as peers debate, Job recommending the former. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman agree that living life in a passive manner is not acceptable. The standard of asserting oneself is seen through Walt Whitman’s poem, “To a Pupil,” in Paul Schutze’s photograph Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as in biographical information about Dickinson and Whitman; however, Dickinson claims in her poem, “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” that on occasions, it is okay to stay out of the spotlight.

When you think of early American literature, debates, and speeches most of what would come to mind would be that of early American settlers and mid century revolutionist. However some equally influential individuals whose writings are often overlooked would be that of poets and story writers. Their writing can establish the same connections and thought provoking questions.

Without some of the famous early American novelist like Mark Twain and Nathaniel Hawthorne, American literature would not be the same as it is in present times. These men are just a few examples of how writing has changed and how it started. These authors used their creativity to create unique stories that people can recognize by hearing the title of the book.

American literature is formed with many different people’s many different aspects and views of life of the world. Writers are not confined to any specific topic, genre, or idea, they are free to think and write whatever they want and believe. A few of many influential writers of American literature are Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allen Poe. Washington Irving was born in New York City on April 3rd 1783. He was the youngest of eleven of a fairly wealthy family and was named after the famous war hero and future president of the United States, George Washington.

The poem, ‘I’m nobody, who are you?’ is about one and a half centuries old. Yet, it hits the nerve of our time: The digital 21st century in which everybody is somebody on the World Wide Web. Emily Dickinson, the US poet born in 1830, was what we would now call a loner. She chose few, very close friends during her lifetime which she mainly spend alone, writing poems and letters to near ones. She carefully chose what to share and with whom, confiding her thoughts and feelings mainly to paper. What she wrote has depth and reaches out to millions, still. The “Nobody” in whose perspective her poem is written, reaches out to a possible soul mate, and the reader. “Nobody” is definitely not an insignificant, pitiable person, rather a self-confident one. “Nobody” seems to enjoy the anonymity of not even telling her name.

Emily Dickinson was one of the many famous American poets whose work was published in the 19th century. Her writing style was seen as unconventional due to her use of “dashes and syntactical fragments”(81), which was later edited out by her original publishers. These fragmented statements and dashes were added to give emphasis to certain lines and subjects to get her point across. Even though Emily Dickinson was thought to be a recluse, she wrote descriptive, moving poems on death, religion, and love. Her poems continue to create gripping discussions among scholars on the meaning behind her poems.
