Ever since the concept of mental illness became more mainstream, it has become a widely controversial topic. Based on what has been seen in society, people who are involved with mental disorders are often dehumanized in some way.

Many citizens do not get the help they need because they are afraid of what will happen after telling someone their feelings. Why is that? People with mental illnesses should be okay with telling someone, while not being scared about what they might think of them after getting the help. That is why citizens should get the help they need. Which then when they do not get the help they need it can lead to even worse circumstances. According to a doctor with a PhD, David Susman. The eight reasons people do not get help when they have a mental illness is, one, fear and shame. Although that most likely did not make any sense to the reader, citizens with or without a mental illness should address the problem so people with mental illness do not feel like they are alone. Teachers and staff will be trained to tell the if a student is experiencing symptoms of any type of mental health disorder. For example, if a student is having irregular mood swings or a fluctuation in weight, which are common symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yes, if not treated it can cause negative effects but with the help from the community these children can live relatively normal lives. At his White House conference on mental illness, Obama said, "We whisper about mental health issues and avoid asking too many questions. The brain is a body part, too. We just know less about it. And there should be no shame in discussing or seeking help for treatable illnesses that affect too many people that we love." It is normal to become emotional with this situation. John Steinbeck’s novel, “East of Eden”, discloses the answer of right and wrong, good versus evil and overcoming sin with a simple Hebrew word “Timshel”, meaning thou mayest, allowing us the freedom to make our individual decisions or choose our path in life; it’s actually God’s perfect gift to everyone. In the beginning, God grants us free will so that we have the ability to love and accept him or not. However, had God not chosen to grant us free will, we would not be human as we know it today, for the original sin would never have occurred. Although about 450 million people in the world currently are suffering from a mental illness, many untreated, the topic still remains taboo in modern society (Mental Health). For years, people with mental illnesses have been shut away or institutionalized, and despite cultural progression in many areas, mental illnesses are still shamed and rarely brought to light outside of the psychiatric community. The many different forms in which mental illness can occur are incredibly prevalent in the world today, and there is a substantial debate about the way that they should be handled. Over forty million Americans suffer from a mental health condition; and, unfortunately, fifty six percent do not receive any treatment at all. “Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion and behavior”(Psychiatry.org). People live with their conditions even though their quality of life and personal relationships may be negatively affected. When one lives in a state of denial about having a mental illness, they are cheating themselves out of living life to their fullest potential and will achieve true freedom only when they face the illness head on and seek recovery.

There are two types of people in this world: one that is able to change and others that refuses to change. In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck mainly focuses on female character that can be illustrated as either a person who is able to fit in to changes as a wife and a mother, or who simply just deviates from home and/or family life.

If we as people truly handle mental health properly then we would not shame people who need help or think of the stereotypical asylum that comes along with mental health, these stigmas quickly prove we do not handle mental health properly.

People have gone from never talking about mental illnesses and never educating themselves about them to going online and blabbing about them. People, more specifically teenage girls, go online and post statuses about how they are feeling “depressed” when really they are just in a negative emotional state. When teenagers say that they are “depressed” because they got into an argument with their boyfriend or girlfriend, or they did not have anything to do for the whole day, or they did not do well on an exam, the word loses it’s meaning (Bine). What these teenagers do not understand is that there is a world of difference between simply being sad, or bored, and being clinically depressed (K). If people had any idea what others with mental illnesses went through on a daily basis, like how much pain and sadness they felt (K), then they would definitely show more compassion and think twice before they posted their idiotic statuses.

Authors have very versatile writing styles that contribute to getting their messages and themes across. An author always has a motive for writing a story and a point they are trying to get across. John Steinbeck has written some very influential novels in his life. These books are read in high schools, as well as in people 's ' free time to try and expand their minds and change their perspectives on life. Steinbeck has a very descriptive writing style that helps make his books classic novels worth reading.

During a mental health event the First Lady, Michelle Obama said, “At the root of this dilemma is the way we view mental health in this country. [...] Whether an illness affects your heart, your leg or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there should be no distinction.” This shows that mental illness stigma in society is based on mental illness being perceived more negatively than other physical illness when it should actually be seen as the same. Stigma around mental illness has had very immense adverse effects on the willingness of undiagnosed suffers to not seek treatment when they need it. As a result of this one in five people with a mental illness will not get the treatment they need which has the effect of high suicide rates among the untreated sufferers. In an effort to reduce stigma around mental illness, so that more undiagnosed sufferers seek treatment, schools should devote more time to increasing awareness of mental illness and its effects.

Justification/Why should we listen?: For years, mental health has had a stigma surrounding it. In different cultures and religions, mental illnesses were thought to be a punishment or a demonic possession. Currently, the taboo has not gone away and people are still suffering. More often times than not, people are underdiagnosed, dismissed, or the stigma creates too much societal pressure to say anything.

Another issue is that people don’t know how to help themselves and they don’t want to try and help themselves. There has been a lot of stigma placed on people that have mental disorders.
