While reading Dr. Bruce Perry’s The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, I found the case of Peter to be the most interesting. At the age of three Peter was rescued from the inhumane conditions of a Russian “baby warehouse” in which one caretaker was responsible for the wellbeing of thirty wailing newborns (Perry and Szalavitz 218). This less than ideal solution for the issue of finding appropriate childcare left Peter and hundreds of other infants deprived of human interaction. During such a crucial period of brain development, this lack of attention had serious repercussions. Luckily, Peter was adopted by extremely devoted American parents who would help pave
The book “The Captain's Dog” follows Lewis and Clark's expedition, which took place from 1804 to 1806, to find A waterway that travelled from the east coast to the west coast, were they end up in modern day Oregon. Most of the U.S. had not been claimed by Europe and was owned by other countries. Lewis and Clark had started the expedition in missouri, following the mississippi river. Though they did not discover A passage way, they discovered many new species of animals. Captain Clark had also brought along his dog, Seaman, who had gotten
John's life seemed to be one major drama after another; he didn't have a good male role model as a kid, and it seems he never was able to get on track. What was amazing about his life was the number of problems that he seemed to get into and how he wriggled out of them (with the help of a friendly person who just happened to meet him) only to run into more problems.
John’s parents were both immigrants, his father from Norway and his mother from Germany. Fladeland followed his parent’s footsteps after he had met a girl from Adams Co, Wisconsin named Anna Marie Holm. He married her. However, their marriage didn’t work out the way it was intended. Fladeland then met a school teacher named Louise Holland, and married her when
Isolation can force an individual to make irrational choices by clouding their sense of cogent judgement. In Ross Sinclair’s short story, “The Painted Door,” the characteristics forced onto an individual as a result of confinement are clearly shown. Living on a small farm, John and Ann are faced with winter weather that is almost impossible to travel in. When their closest neighbor is five miles away, it’s hard for them to live in such a world where communication is sparse. Forced to live in such a world of isolation, Steven, Ann and John’s judgement to make rash decisions is limited and has a substantial impact on the individuals internally.
John and Jen Grogan have always wanted a family so they decide to adopt a yellow lab. However, shortly after purchasing their new pet, Marley, they soon realize that they got a little more than they had planned.‘The World's Worst Dog’ due to the fact that he’s a big troublemaker. According to page 24, “He cleared coffe tables, scattered magazines, knocked photos off shelves, and sent glasses flying.” This behavior shows how destructive Marley is throughout the story. He also has a taste for chewing on carpets and couch legs, and he enjoys pulling toilet paper all around the house. Even as Marley grows old, he continues to stay energetic. Ever since he was a puppy,
One of John friends found him a job at Lake Tahoe in June of 1925. His plan was to make enough money to become a freelance writer in New York City. He finally seemed to a secure job and things seemed alright. After a couple of months working as a reported John realized that he did not fit this kind of job. Numerous times he failed to show up at work and was soon after fired.

It is amazing, ridiculous, and sometimes scary how the brain deals with trauma. It is also ludicrous to believe that your environment and how you are treated are not always believed to strongly affect children. The first story in this book is a very moving one. I thought it interesting and appropriate that that was his first child patient.
My personal reactions to the book The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, were positive and enlightening. I would describe my reactions as enlightening because the content was written in a different perspective than I originally expected. This book is a small memoir of the author’s growth and development as a psychiatrist working with children suffering from severe trauma. It is rare to find a book so informative and practical and yet inspiring to read; I’m glad this was a required piece for this course.

In the story “ The Dog That Bit People”, by James Thurber, mother tends to defend the Airedale’s actions and blame the other people for them. “ He bit a congressman who had called to see my father on business. My mother had never liked the Congressman she said the signs of his horoscope showed he couldn’t be trusted” as well as “ “I wouldn’t be associated with such a man,” mother said. “Muggs could read him like a book.”” On page two in paragraph three of “The Dog That Bit People” James Thurber gives an example of how mother made an excuse as to why the Airedale bit people by blaming them. However, in that paragraph it explains how she even had to persuade herself that it had been for the best that he had bitten the Congressman, even though
In the story, “The Dog That Bit People” written by James Thurber, the narrator’s mother always tended to blame others for Muggs actions. In paragraph 2, page 2, the mother went out into the pantry to check on Muggs. While the mother was in the pantry, mice had started running up to her. Muggs just laid on the floor doing nothing about it, so the narrator’s mother smacked him. Muggs then tried to bite her, but missed; however, instead of blaming Muggs for his actions, the mother blamed herself for her actions. In this incident, the mother is blaming herself and not Muggs for his actions. In paragraph 6, page 4, Mrs. Detweiler had been helping the narrator and the narrator’s mother call for Muggs. Mrs. Detweiler made her way into the living room
