Dr. Martin Luther King, in his persuasive speech, “I Have a Dream” (1963) propounds that the United States is not implementing Constitutional Rights for black people. King develops and guides his thesis through repetition, alliteration, and parallelism. King’s purpose is to open the eyes of the government to the unfair rights given to white men over the rights given to men of color. King is in protest of black rights, he is reaching out to the government, white men, and black men affirming his dream for not only his kids, but all kids of this great nation. Black people began a movement to prove that they were being treated unfairly by the United States government. There were numerous riots and marches. For example, After the Brown versus board of education supreme court case there was a law put in place that segregation in schools was not allowed. “ Nine black students enrolled at formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957, testing a landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional (Integration).” On the September 4, 1952 when class officially started at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, many people showed up to protest the event about to take place. The Governor of Little Rock sent in the state National Guard to block the crowds so the nine students could make it to class. Even with state law enforcement, the “Little Rock Nine” still could not make it safely into the school because of the riots that had broken out. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the current president of the United States, got word of this. He sent in federal troops to escort the “Little Rock Nine” into the school building. The “Little Rock Nine” successfully attended their first full day of classes on the morning of September 25, 1952. The Civil Rights Movement became a time to protest against segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. being one of the greatest speakers followed suit. In his I Have a Dream speech King uses repetition so what he's saying resonates with the listeners and so it reinforced the point he's trying to get across. A phrase that is repeated will be stick with the listener versus something that's not. In the I Have a Dream speech King repeats many important phrases, one of which being the phrase, “We can never be satisfied” “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one (I Have a Dream)”. King is making a point that they will not stop the protesting as long as they are not given the rights they are promised in the Emancipation Proclamation. Near the end of King's speech he uses repetition so his words will resonate within his listeners. “Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. But not only that; let freedom ring from the Stone Mountain of Georgia. Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.
