Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most iconic, influential characters in American history to this day. Since his assassination in 1968, King’s legacy has lived on in the hearts of Americans. We have even set aside a day of the year (third monday in January) to honor his courageous efforts to make this world a better place. The reasoning behind the word “courageous” in the previous sentence is because in the time that King was making his campaign, oppression of the African American race was still painfully real. Martin Luther King jr. was one of the most influential persons of the 20th Century. He is the father of the modern civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is recognized around the world as a symbol of freedom as well as peace. King practiced everything that he preached, he did not preach or speak values that he himself did not follow. He established himself as a pastor that was not afraid of hard work, guiding the middle-class congregation to public service. The Civil Rights Movement had several pros however there are cons to every situation. The suffering of people were cured by the medicine of the great personality that still stand as the role model of the world, Martin Luther King Jr. He cured the people with the speeches they delivered and the letters they wrote. The letters and speeches delivered during this movement had been very inspirational in which it made more people want to become a part of this immense movement. Time and time again we have seen the act of civil disobedience being a success. The most notorious being Martin Luther King Jr. and his endeavor to bring about the Civil Right's Movement. However, Martin Luther King Jr. was not the only one to demonstrate the positive effect civil disobedience can have on a nation. People like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Thoreau, those involved in the Boston Tea Party, and many others exhibited the potential of civil disobedience.

Fear and prejudice are two significant factors that people let subdue their emotions and beliefs. Throughout history and all the way to current day, the people and groups who never surrendered to fear and prejudice were the ones who prevailed. With that, one should never surrender to fear or prejudice, regardless of the cost.

Learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Right Movement in high school, it opened my interest of human rights and it gave me a different view on how to value individual’s right. Black and other supporters led the Civil Right movement and it came to existence to fight equal rights. One interesting fact is that The Civil right movement was in motion before the 1960’s. Martin Luther King is an extraordinary man who has accomplished great thing in his fight against injustice and segregation. like Selma and other cities it was clouded in a storm of racism but Martin Luther King came and reduced it to ash. “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” (Martin Luther King) and I think of that wondering if I can live up to those words. Back in the 20’s through 60’s racism was at it’s strongest and it got worse. While the civil rights movement started before 1865 many things have changed for the better of African Americans. Some people do not see the changes as a good thing because they did not agree with African Americans being free, they thought that African Americans deserved to be slaves along with many other things. The Civil Rights movement has changed African Americans lives in many different ways over the years since 1865. There were many events that occured to help change the African Americans lives three of these events are; the ending of the civil war, Brown vs. Board of Education, and Martin Luther King Jr. civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King is considered the formative figure in the modern fight for civil rights (Honor Martin Luther King's Legacy , n.d.). He became a legend in his own right by leading a large group of people in his movement who were inspired by his “I have a Dream” speech, which resonated across the nation. People that he met, addressed, encouraged, or influenced, followed him knowing there would be a light at the end of the tunnel to end segregation. Dr. King wisely used his knowledge and experience to solve a myriad of issues without trying to cause further public distress or troubles. Even though his followers were often at odds, he was able to corral them to overcome their burdens. Dr. King’s attributes have inspired me in many ways.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s work and life were influenced by the fact that many African Americans in the South suffered from violence and from being treated as second class citizens. I really believe that Martin Luther King Jr. was a man with a vision, a leader for the black community, a man for a non-violent movement, and even though he was not for the black power political and social movement he accepted it. Martin Luther Kings vision for Peace and justice was what many Americans wanted. He believed that violence was not the answer and while he was trying to save lives many were ready to die for what they believed in. The historical figure, Dr. King impacted a lot of causes, however, there was the problem of sexis I guess for that era it wasn’t unusual for men to suppress their women and a lot of women accepted it because most were taught that men were the head of the family and dominated. Can you imagine a time where you are condemned to the worst treatment imaginable, because of the color of your skin? The 1960’s were a time of great injustice for African Americans living in the United States. During the movement for equality, the black community were deeply influenced by civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. and his speech, “I Have a Dream.” He delivered his speech on August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial to an audience of approximately 250,000 supporters. The speech’s main purpose served to advocate for civil and economic equality for African Americans, and called for an end to racism in America. Looking at his speech rhetorically gives insight on how he was able to motivate the public to fight for their rights.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn says that “in keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.” This quote explains that if we keep quiet about injustices now, it will come back in the future a thousand fold for new generations. Some people find it easier to remain silent; however, speaking up against wrongdoing will change the future and it can prevent the loss of life.

In the civil rights era Martin Luther King was a dominant figure during the movement for racial equality. Pushing forward non-violence tactics and peaceful marches, King showed us that violence isn’t the only way to change society. His non-violent marches and speeches emphasizing the importance of non-violence helped push America forward towards racial equality. Unlike some organizations such as The Nation of Islam or Malcolm X, King used true teachings to lead a change. “The Nation of Islam” recognizes a greater “god” or “force” by combining every religion together to make one huge race and religion. You can think of them as radical Christians that believe that Jesus is the “son of God” but don’t actually believe in God. They believed that
