The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., embodied many of the attributes that we look for in Army leaders today. Dr. King lived a life characterized by moral courage, selfless service, respect for everybody, honor, and integrity. During his time as the de facto leader of the civil rights movement, he was motivated by the plight of blacks throughout the South, both during his own time and for generations before him. Dr. King writes in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” (1963) of his frustration over a gamut of issues: simple but persistent issues like the constant disrespect and taunting that black people faced on a daily basis; issues that affected his own family, like having to explain to his young daughter why he couldn 't take her to a local amusement park; and darker issues like vicious beatings and unprovoked lynchings and murder. His sense of empathy ran deep, for their struggle was his own.

Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs.

We can see his decisiveness when his arguments for stopping discrimination against black were not enough to change the situation. During the time of Martin Luther’s life African American people were treated very poorly. African Americans that stood up for what they believed in were sometimes jailed, abused or depending on the extent killed. Martin Luther knew about all of risk and consequences and he still continued to protest, and stand up for what he believed in. Secondly, He did something that was frowned upon. During the 1940’s through the 1960’s most white people were not found of African American citizens. They did not like that the African American people were protesting ands standing up for what they believed in. Martin Luther stood up for

The civil rights conflict had been raging for years. Violence from both sides, primarily the brutal force from the segregationists, had lead to a massive conflict that broke the country.
