What Do You Think is Dr. King’s Most Important Identity? What is the most important aspect about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that comes to mind when his name appears in a conversation? For me, it is his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. I know Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by the fighting he did for equality for all people in the United States. With that being said, I believe the identity that describes him the most is his civil rights activist identity. After reading and researching Martin Luther King Jr., I realized, like everyone else, he has many identities. Dr. King is well-known to be a civil rights activist, but his own words and actions also show that he is a father, Christian, and a leader. The “gospel of freedom” greatly influenced Dr. King to be the person that he was. While he was writing the letter he describes, “I am too compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular home town” (King 2). Dr. King was not intimidated to share what he believed in as he went from town to town to speak to their people. He did what felt was right because Christianity led him to believe what was right; he was not reluctant to do the right action for his people. Dr. King wanted black men and women to have equal rights. There was an eleven-year period where he did numerous actions, and one of those actions was travelling over six million miles and speaking over twenty-five hundred times (Biography). Christianity was a crucial part of Dr. King’s life, as it led him to be a leader and do what is right for the country and for the African Americans.
