On April 16, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a compelling letter from a Birmingham jail cell. This letter was to his peers, fellow religious leaders of the local churches who had felt his direct action tactic in their city were of poor taste. He was written a letter from these leaders and King felt a need to respond. Dr. King was a man who was used to being criticized and usually turned the other cheek. In this particular moment, he felt the need to respond to his peers and he did a successful job of addressing their concerns. King was proficient in using descriptive adjectives that provoke emotion and forces the reader to empathize with his points. Most successful was his use of biblical and philosophical reference to support his argument and remind the clergymen of their role and responsibility. King uses a plethora of non-basic words which stresses his level of education, ability to be well-versed and worldly knowledge. His sophisticated use of words definitely makes him a leader to his peers or any adversary that dares question him.

His father and grandfather were pastors. He later followed in their footsteps and became the pastor of his father. Along with being involved in the church community he became a non-violent activist for human rights and the black communities during the times of segregation. Because he had graduated from high school, received his Bachelor’s Degree from Morehouse College, and then went on to get his doctorate in systematic theology from Boston University proved that he was a well-educated black man. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs.

Dr. King was a brave man. Even when he was thrown into jail. As long as he could change the way blacks were being treated he didn’t care about the consequences. He was never afraid to say what he was feeling. He was brave enough to stand in front of a lot of people to say his speech. It’s hard to pinpoint just one of Martin Luther King Jr’s acts of bravery. Dr. King put his as well as his family’s wellbeing at risk for his purpose. Dr. King walked into the racist and narcissistic jaws of the segregated south and urged for change. Not only did he take a physical beating, they also tried to defeat him mentally.

Because Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s grandfather, father, and mother were reverends, religion was always a significant part of his life. King, as an activist for racial equality, continued to follow the lessons and advice of the bible. The bible has an evident impact on how King sees the world around him; "I say it as a minister of the gospel who loves the church, who was nurtured in its bosom, who has been sustained by its Spiritual blessings, and who will remain true to it as long as the cord of life shall lengthen." After his arrest for leading an equality movement in Birmingham, eight white religious leaders criticized his actions and beliefs. Dr. King tussled with the cares of life looking for solutions, concern for his family, and stood up for righteousness, justice, and truth. Dr. King knew what he was up against was daunting and knew enough to call on the name of Jesus. Dr. King believed in the power of prayer even through the countless number of threats he received and even arrested he stood unyielding for what is right, justice. Dr. King refused to sink in the quick-sands of racism and abhorrence. Dr. King realized that he had to alter the mindset of society if change was to come.

Martin Luther King Jr. went to Birmingham not only because he had ties there, but to lead the fight for freedom. Fighting for the minorities to have freedom meant a lot to Dr. King, not only does it affect him but if affects the community. He started boycotting the city’s segregated public busses and then became the voice of Americans civil rights movement. While Dr. King was incarcerated in an Alabama jail he took the time to write back to some clergymen that had questioned his tactics. In 1963, he wrote a letter to help others, specifically the clergymen, to understand that the time they are living is rough for the minorities especially black Americans. He called it a phase and that soon it will work its self out so that everybody will respect one another and things will be different. Although King knew everybody was against the blacks of the community and him, he used natural law and getting to know the people that are truly there to help them was used to show they were on their own to fight the battle to freedom.
