Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs.

MLK is described as a man who was generally quiet and listened attentively as others talked. Ling (2002) states, “King had a remarkable ability to get people who would otherwise be constantly feuding to work together”. The key to a successful leader is bringing people together. King was able to bring people together and work together for an achievable goal. He could quiet crowds and calm them down to be more peaceful. He spoke on nonviolence as the better resolution. According to Ling (2002), “For King, leadership meant standing up for what he believed in and being a drum major for justice”. A leader is also one who can relate to people. King was able to relate to the people who spoke to therefore African Americans were more likely to listen and follow what King had to say. King was a leader because he challenged the status quo. He had the courage to stand up for what he believed, the rights of all people to fair and equal treatment.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an astonishing activist that inspired a numerous amount of people with his speech. Dr. King was great because he displayed some traits. Some of the traits that he possessed were leadership, determination, and bravery. He was a man that preached about justice and wanted peace. Everyone can make a change and keep the dream alive by doing what Dr. King wanted. Which was to allow freedom to ring and to all come together as one.

What does it take to be a great leader? A great leader includes: being involved to make a change, being an innovator in a community, and motivating in order to make a great change. Martin Luther King Jr. had acquired all of these qualities to be a great leader before his surprising death. Unfortunately Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4th, 1968. King was a hero and a leader in the United States. Therefore, the assassination of Martin Luther Jr. was unjust because he was a great leader, an innovator, and a motivator.

Not everyone is born a leader. Some are pushed into it due to unfortunate circumstances, while others step up to the plate in order to make a radical transformation. It takes a true leader to be able to surmount obstacles that seem to transcend his or her strength in order to bring about change to his or her community. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of those leaders. He was undoubtedly the leading Civil Rights leader during his time, inspiring African Americans all across the country to fight their way through white oppression using non-violent means.

During his lifetime, Martin Luther king dared to not only dream about a better future but also fight for it. He was not afraid from having confrontations in order to promise a change. We can see his decisiveness when his arguments for stopping discrimination against black were not enough to change the situation. He decided to make a direct action in order to make society confront the issue.

MLK was a humanitarian figure of our history because of his strong leadership in bringing African American people together as one during bad times. Also, he engages with his follower while creating a bond between him and them that increases their level of drive and morals. In addition, his bravery and courage allowed his movement and marches to have a big impact in American life today. What makes a world leader so pronounced? To start, a leader is someone who can stand up and make a change for the better in the world. The qualities that a world leader should possess would be the ability to motivate, good judgement skills, sense of urgency, and the ability to listen to other’s concerns (Oswald, 2014). Having a leader possess all of these qualities can ensure that the world, or country, is going to be led in the right direction. With all these qualities being said, it is shown that Martin Luther King Jr. possesses all of these traits. Great leaders like Dr. King himself, often have to deal with a time and life consuming bums on the road to success, in which he did. All of these bumps prepared Martin Luther King Jr. to be one of the greatest leaders in the world.

There are varieties of leadership styles. Niccolo Machiavelli and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, are opposites in their characterization of what makes a good leader. One justifies that the “end justifies the means” while the other directs us that “it is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends” (King). I agree with the latter of the two believing that the first one burns bridges, while the latter builds them. However, both leadership styles exist today.

He is well known for his ‘I have a dream’ speech that he made in august 1963, during the civil rights march on Washington. Martin Luther leadership was deeply anchored in speeches. He was a transformational leader based on the steps and decisions he took to see his visions through. He clearly communicated a concrete and powerful vision, he had a dream which he clearly articulated to his followers, giving them clear call to action and inspiring them to share his vision and to show support. This is what people like; they want to follow a leader who has clear direction of where he is going or where he is taking his followers. This made him popular. People need a leader who cares about their values, wants, hopes, and aspirations. His ‘I have a dream’ speech brought awareness and humanity to the American people about civil rights.
