The world into which Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483, was in the midst of great change. In Western European history, the Middle Ages (roughly from 400 to 1400) had been an age of walls and of faith. Around each little town men had built massive stone walls against the evils outside. Inside these walls, medieval people knew their place. They were craftsmen, noblemen, churchmen, farmers, and knights.
