In America, mass murders are a common occurrence in our everyday lives. According to USA TODAY1 since 2006, there has been over two hundred events of mass killings murders of four or more people. The devastating reappearance of violence almost every two weeks of horrific mass murders2 appear behind our television glaring us down, questioning how someone could do an act so inhumane. While Americans indulge in horror movies, violent video games, movies and anything that makes the heart beat faster; mass killings on American soil quickly alters the mindset we have for it. Once murder and atrocity occur in our hometowns, in our schools and movies theaters then it becomes very real for us. Americans individualistic mindset treats the global problems
It decieves the perception of viewers by portraying mass murders as a small issue that makes headlines frequently but cannot be solved. As for viewers, they must develop a bigger perspective and should not allow a few anchors to stop us from ending violence because they say our society is headed for self-inflicted extinction. Although, the article is conducted very bluntly, sucessfully plays with the right emotions of a reader and combined mixtures of facts and opinion to convince his idea, this article contain biases. For example Adam used several reports and facts about gun control laws in several countries, then gave his opinions on those laws. He also indicated a personal connection with the mistreatment of gun controls. By mentioning either of these biases, would be important to mention before a reader attempts to maintain an objective view of the article
A major concern in the United States is why mass shootings occur and what needs to be done to stop them from happening. Mass shootings have gained a significant amount of attention in 2015. Within the year, a total of 372 mass shootings have occurred in the United States killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. Mass shootings have become a popular trend within the media and have given the impression that it is the new normal. Mass shootings are a dysfunction to society, due to the fact that they create horror and tragedy within the country. Schools, shopping malls, and even movie theatres have all endured the horrific violence. Mass shootings are nothing new, however, they seem to be occurring more often and are becoming more and more violent. The three leading factors to mass shootings are problematic masculinity, mental illness, and gun control.
Over the last decade or so, the United States of America has been shaken by an epidemic of terrifying mass shootings, devastating slayings of unexpecting victims, and unnerving annihilations of the innocent. There is no specific target, no explicitly sought-out group, nor definite individual. From a classroom of first-graders, to a crowded movie theatre, to a U.S. Naval yard, the location seems at most, random, other than that it is almost always a public place. The perpetrators responsible for these horrific murders also vary, and often surprise those who thought they knew them. However, while the occurrences of mass shootings are unpredictable and always shocking, most have one thing in
Ever since its creation America has always been seen as the icon for peace and prosperity; however, just like every other nation in the world, America has encountered some exceedingly dark and sinister incidents of the past years. Like David Berkowitz’s killing spree in New York City during the summer of 1976, the Virginia Tech shooting that took place on the college campus in 2007, and even the horrific Oklahoma City Bombing that Timothy McVeigh orchestrated in 1995. But there is one event in particular that was even more heinous and stranger than any of those – the Jonestown Massacre. It was a mass suicide that occurred on November 18, 1978, in Guyana that took the lives of over 900 innocent people (The Stigmatized Deaths in Jonestown…

For many years there has been a battle with the control over guns but what has really brought the attention is the recent shooting let it be in schools or public spaces. The question here is are gun regulations not efficient enough? In behalf of the reader's response lens the reason that it deals with the generations present and future ones. The assault
Seeing stories about mass shootings on the news is an everyday occurrence. Mass shootings occur when people intentionally and indiscriminately shoot multiple people at one venue or at one time. In the United States, there have been 62 mass shootings in the last thirty years. There have been 24 in the last seven years, alone. If he lived in the twenty first century the monster in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly and the movie by the same title, directed by James Whale, would be a modern day mass shooter. The monster and serial shooters share some comparably important traits, such as being bullied by humans, wanting revenge, and having psychological problems.
Many criminals who get access to these lethal weapons can commit mass murders or directly target the government. Terrorist attacks can be carried, killing hundreds or sometimes even thousands. Thirdly, armed citizens can accidently kill another citizen when a dangerous situation unfolds. When danger strikes, the person with a firearm is most likely to panic the most, and so they will pull the trigger on anyone to save their own life. Similarly, the police sometimes accidently kill innocent citizens who otherwise were being calm and were abiding by the law.
Without a doubt there is a lot of violence on the news today, from mass shootings to murder almost every day. The violence happening should have schools and work places concerned and working better security to their environment. Mass shootings that have occurred over the years such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School, Aurora Movie Theater and the University of California had shooter that had been diagnosed with one or more mental issue. In the article by Jonathan Metzel, he explained each of the three shootings that are listed above in detail. Jessica Jigmond stated in her article that by voting having better gun laws could help prevent shootings to occur and killing innocent people. The last article Guns, Schools, and
When the Holocaust is mentioned, the first thing people think of is usually the concentration camps or Hitler. Most people forget about the other tragic events that occurred outside of the camps. More importantly, they usually identify they blame the wrong people who had committed these crimes. The Einsatzgruppen had operated in the territories and areas owned by the Germans. These Killing Squads were told to murder people and had done so willingly. They had found the most brutal ways to torture and murder the Jews of Eastern Europe and Asia.
Mass shootings are a huge epidemic in the United States right now. Many people live in fear of another mass shooting. Two important facts to know about mass shootings is what exactly a mass shooting is and how often they occur. CNN’s authors used the Gun Violence Archive to define a mass shooting in his article “A Visual Guide; Mass Shootings in America” as “any incident where four or more people are wounded or killed”(Willingham). The frequency of mass shootings depends on which source you look at; using the definition given by CNN as well statistics, the United States has seen “136 mass shootings in the first 164 days of this year”(Willingham). However, author Sam Harris has a staggeringly different statistic in his blog article “The Riddle of the Gun”. Harris claims that “seventy mass shootings have occurred in the U.S. since 1982, leaving 543 dead” (Harris). Harris’s article is three years older than CNN’s article, yet the facts are staggeringly different by an amount that is nearly impossible to reach in three years. The definitions the two articles used for defining mass shootings are obviously different, but are both capable of informing the reader on the statistics of mass shootings frequency.
Recently the online magazine Kelly Gallagher posted an article on their website entitled “America’s Killing Contagion.” This article was written on the frenzy of mass shootings that have happened so frequently in the past few years. The article highlights not only how easy it is for people with vengeful intentions to obtain firearms, but also how the media can make it even harder to prevent these tragedies by encouraging others to commit similar crimes (Gallagher 3 & 5).
On the night of October 1st, 2017, a gunman was able to open fire on a crowd of concert goers from his hotel room at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, leaving 58 people dead and 851 injured in the process. It is defined as the deadliest shooting in modern US history, and involved dozens of weapons which were all purchased legally in the state, many of which were also modified to become semi-automatic rifles. If this one incident doesn’t sound bad enough, there are many other types of mass shootings like these that are reported by the media and often involve weapons which fall into what’s defined as an assault weapon. Because mass shootings like these happen so often, many people are starting to believe the right for
On October 1, 2017 America was, yet again, devastated when Las Vegas suffered the United States worst mass shooting. One man killed over 50 people and injured 527. After he was finished firing from the 39th floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort, he committed suicide. His name was Stephan Paddock (Yan and Park). When most people think of a mass shooting, they think of a terroristic act or someone shooting at a large group of innocent citizens, like Columbine High School or Sandy Hook Elementary School. In actuality, most people do not realize that whenever two or more people are injured or killed by a gun, it is considered a mass shooting. These “mass shootings” happen every day in America and they are one of the leading causes of death in
This paper examines the act of mass murder. If society can find a valid answer as to what causes a person to commit mass murders, then the possibility of preventing the act would be great because it would be probable to recognize the psychotic behavior that is associated with mass murder. Occurrences of mass murder for instance the shootings at Sandy Hook, Aurora Colorado theatre; Columbine and Virginia Tech over and over again dominate much of society's attention not only for weeks but often for months following the incident. The research question I have selected is: ‘What are the sociological and psychological causes for unforeseen criminal actions of Mass
