One influential Supreme Court decision would be the case if Brown v. Board of Education. This case is important because it helped stop segregation in schools. Before this case there was another case named Plessy v. Ferguson where they ruled in 1896 where schools were to be "separate but equal." This meant that black and whites could not attend the same school but they were getting the same education. It wasn't until the case of Brown v. Board of education where it changed. In this case Linda Brown was not allowed to attend a school in her area because it was an all white school and she was black. The mother of Linda Brown filed a suit against the school. This suit went all the way up to the Supreme Court. The decision to this case was made on May 17, 1954. As the book states the court decided, " Segregation in schools violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment." This meant that having separate facilities of school based on race was unconstitutional and not equal at all. …show more content…
