Angelou has a very creative way of saying things throughout her poem. Angelou talks about a woman in the poem that talks about herself a lot she repeats the phrase“ I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman that's me”( Angelou) therefore Angelou might be this person in her poem. The focus of this paper is to critique Angelou’s credibility, sincerity, and appeal to her whole audience in her delivery during the Spelman Commencement Address in 1992.

Human behaviors are recurring themes in many written works. These behaviors vary depending on the point the author is trying to make. In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” Gabriel Garcia Marquez aims to reveal the impact of certain human behaviors. The behaviors Marquez uses are patience versus impatience, and judgment.

When I first read this poem, I was overwhelmed with conflicting emotions. Maya Angelou depicts herself as a fighter that will never give up, no matter the circumstances. She has obviously faced some difficult situations in her life that should have stopped her but she continues to triumph in the face of adversity. In this way, I am inspired to continue pursuing my goals. I also felt discouraged and disgusted, mostly because of the types of obstacles that are described in this poem. It is symbolizes the obstacles that many African Americans faced in the past as a result of the abolition of slavery, racism and inequality. The discouraging part of this poem is that some of these very inequalities and injustices still go on today. So, while this poem illustrates strength,

“The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” by Gabriel Márquez, is related to the classical theme of human’s selfishness verses sympathy. However, Márquez uses narrative elements such as plot, setting, and different characters, to provide much more in-depth sources of evidence to support his theme.

It has been said that there are only about 18 or so themes that describe the human condition. This quote was made in reference to Shakespeare, and posited that all of the books and movies that we digest and assimilate can be shown to have their roots in these canonical themes. This phrase is critical to the theme of the story as it provides the readers information on the Angel and allows them to understand he was frail and week. This also gives the people who found him a gateway to a larger domain of opportunities to obtain money. In the short story, “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings.” Gabriel Marquez, develops the character of the Angel through the use of symbols, character, and plot to demonstrate encounters with those who are weak and how the Angel overcomes adversity through courage and strength.

Though there are many conflicts in “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” the main conflict is man vs. society. The angel is found in Pelayo's courtyard and is then moved into the chicken coop. Once word of the angel spreads people come to watch him. The townspeople flock to the angel even though they are not entirely sure what he is. Most are skeptical about whether or not he is actually an angel because the miracles he preforms were not what was expected. They threw rocks to try to wake him up. At one point they even branded him with a branding iron. Once the spider woman comes to town the townspeople forgot all about the angel and flock to her.

Maya Angelou is one out of the best known poets. She has written a lot of poems that inspires and assist people with their lives. She has a “desire humbleness to learn and experience all that life has to offer her” (gale biography in context, “Maya Angelou More than a Poet”) which makes her poems have a meaning to them. In addition, Maya Angelou got a lot of pieces of poems considered equality to her experience as a human of the United States during race times and her experience as a person who worked with other civil right activist. Maya Angelou uses deep themes that leaves the reader to think about the topic is being talked about. In her poem, “Still I Rise” she talks metaphorically about discrimination. In the poem, it states, “does my haughtiness offend you? ( the poetry foundation, “Maya Angelou”). This quote from the poem shows how the rest of the poem is about people believe they is better than other people and that the other people should suffer because they are inferior to the people, but the people being abused should not be embarrassed of who they are and be thankful for life(“Maya Angelou More than a Poet 1”).
