How do you define and measure success for yourself and for your students?
As a chemistry teacher, I consider myself a successful teacher when I have prepared my students for college level science courses and I have prepared my students for a lifetime of learning and making informed decisions.
Measuring success for my students in chemistry involves careful study of the chemistry TEKS, the College Board SAT in chemistry standards, as well as the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards for Science. Units of study are designed that include these standards. Instructional delivery is designed to allow students to meet the standards including both content and process standards. With the use of mastery learning, I measure success for individual
Successful teaching occurs when the teacher is able to select the most efficient method for reaching out to each student’s individual style of learning and inspire students to rise to their highest potential. While the responsibilities of a teacher are extensive (as one can serve as a teacher, a friend, a counselor, a disciplinarian, an entertainer, a facilitator), I believe that students should play a big part in shaping own education as well.
After completing a lesson, it is important to evaluate the scores to see how successful the learning plan was. It is important to use the appropriate measurement evaluation to help determine the overall results. In using instructional content and curricular content, decisions can be made on modifications to the learning plan for this science lesson.
My teaching philosophy is to encourage students to study chemistry by arousing their curiosity. I also want students to appreciate the interdependence of chemistry in their daily life. My passion for teaching comes from my love of learning. Even though I work in a research laboratory I love to watch the lit-up face of my students the exact moment the explanation of some chemistry mechanism dawned on them. So, I want to create a learning environment where students are eager to learn about chemistry to understand the world around them.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online, the word success means “degree or measure of succeeding. Favorable or desired outcome; also: the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence” (“Success”). However, I find this definition to be overly simplistic, because first of, it says “measure of succeeding” but what is success? I believe success is more than the attainment of money or fame; success is when we achieved a point of desired happiness in our life regardless of fame or wealth. James Geoffrey, says, “If you believe success is simply making (or having) a lot of money, you may be setting yourself up for failure” (09 April, 2012). Implying that money is not always the key of success but may in fact set you up for failure more than
Success can be achieved in many different ways. For example, Justin Bieber was discovered very early on in his life, this led to the abuse of drugs, money and power. On the other hand, David Beckham was born into a poor family but overcame that and grew up to be in a happy marriage and one of the best soccer players in the US. So, is success measured by wealth, happiness, popularity or none of the above? Reading People Magazine, or Seventeen Magazine, society sees all the struggles individuals went through just to get where they are, and yet they still aren’t happy. Famous people may be labeled as successful because of their wealth, but are lacking in friendships, happiness, and love. Social media, marketers and celebrity news has created
I define success by being financially stable and loved by my friends and family. I believe that for a person to be successful, they need to be happy with every aspect of their life; this ranges from work, social, and at home. I believe that hard work will pay off in one form or another. I plan on being successful by absorbing as much as I can in school, and then apply what I learned in the workforce. My graduation goal is to obtain a bachelor in finance and MBA in business. At the same time, I would be around thirty hours shy of my criminal justice degree. I won’t rest until I obtain my educational goals. I plan on taking around fifteen to twenty hours a semester and doing a few hours in the summer. I usually like to spend my time in the library
I define success as having peace of mind in knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of, and being happy and fulfilled in that. It’s important to grow and build up to be successful. I don’t feel as though success should be determined based solely on a career, but through a balance of all aspects of life. I also feel that success is achieving goals, and being respected for what you can contribute. My grandmother, Jane, has been quite successful throughout her life. I believe this because she has had a very respectful career, a good education, and still maintained a positive family and social life. She has now retired early, and is living feeling fulfilled and happy with where her choices have taken her.
Everybody has at least failed once, but there is always success behind everything you do. If you fail at something don’t give up. Success is not that far behind.
A successful person will learn to overtake basic obstacles with little to no difficulty leading them to become financially stable after college. In the article “What Drives Success?” by Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeldjan, it talks about how the secret to becoming successful can be taught with three traits and change the way people see education; But any of those traits missing can turn into a disaster. A demand for a typical successful College student would require them to have multiple school resources, and the more resources they have, the more probable they are to becoming successful. The resources which build traits that develop a successful college student mindset will keep being formed by their academic and personal aspects.
In addition, a successful teacher is who uses all her strategies to teach her students in a positive learning environment. For instance, a successful teacher challenges her student by teaching them how to
“But what of the criteria for success?” Teachers define success in many ways. We must not only broaden our definition, but also make sure the definition is clear to everyone. In this way, students will know when they have done a good job, and they will know how to improve their work.
The goal for students is to learn the course material and apply it to their lives. I expect to learn from them. I learn what textbook ideas work and what do not. I learn what is important to students and leverage it for a meaningful chemistry class. I define teacher success when the students understand the lesson material and the overall standard. My goal is every student learns.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a familiar, yet complex, question that every child at some time or another has been asked. As a child, it is essentially simple to decide what to be; but as that child grows up his or her ideas and passions change. Passion is what drives people to further their education. Everyone has a dream about what their career might look like once they reach adulthood. It is ultimately what we decide to do with our life that determines how successful one can be. This takes a lot of hard work, curiosity, the ability to think critically, and the support of family and teachers. In the articles “Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths” by Gary Colombo, “The Achievement of
I believe it is the responsibility of the teacher to be a bridge between the students and the chemistry field, because most students taking a chemistry class for the first time usually have the misconception that chemistry is a very hard subject and that you need to know a lot of math to take the class. One way I intend to do this is to let students know that the math that is required in a majority of freshmen and sophomore chemistry classes is the ability to use a calculator. Also, as a teacher I consider it my duty to help students overcome anxiety, enjoy learning chemistry, and be successful. I believe that a teacher’s excitement (expressed in facial expression, voice inflection, gesture, and general involvement) can arouse a ton of interest from the students because students can only be as excited about a class as their teacher is. Therefore, I will teach with enthusiasm, conviction, and humor to keep the students motivated, inspired, and relaxed.
To begin with, measurement is an essential part in every human’s daily activity. People apply measurements in Mathematics, in Science, in calculations, in Economics, or in their typical calculation for the simplest estimation of market price when buying any products or services. Measurement’s role in Accounting is by then not any less than a vital role. Indeed, all transactions or assumptions provided in the Accounting Information Systems are presented by numbers, which are results of the measurement process.
