Lesson 1, Project The ability to access credible information is paramount. No matter what time of medium a person access (radio, television, newspaper, the internet, or social media), people should take responsibility and decide how much to information to believe. For example, social media websites like Facebook influences over 400 million users a day (Peiyu & Arnott, 2013). Websites as such allows users to access others affiliated in various interest groups around the world. Some people believe that media outlets abuse and manipulate the truth to confuse active media users. Today, studies prove different approaches to decide and control how readers should process new information is as the truth. Personally, the most common form of media
Now a days people run to media for answers on current events and expect information to be accurate, but yet do the people know that almost all media news reports are bias. Often times people run to news channels that give out information they want to hear based off the media’s beliefs. The media has always been bias, but it wasn’t until certain events occurred that opened society’s eyes. There are six powerhouse news sources that all have their own type of bias which points out their own perspective on current events. When it comes to current events, different media platforms represent the story from different perspectives. Viewers want their views to be validated rather than challenged and don’t give ideas of what people should do. Although
In a letter that Ta-Nehisi Coates once wrote to his son he said “It is so easy to look away, to live with the fruits of our history and to ignore the great evil done in all of our names. But you and I have never truly had that luxury” (Coates). In his letter, Mr. Coates warns his son to never loose the internal battle between indifference and what is right. This is a constant struggle society faces around the world, and often loses. The battle against indifference has been a losing battle in the past and even more recently throughout the world and as society loses to indifference it gains guilt as if guilt were war debt. The guilt of society is growing at an exponential rate, where countries around the world would rather stick their heads
In this new day and age we are granted with advanced technology that helps every one of us. A major capability that we now have is the capacity to spread information like no other. The television and internet are major sources to access material and influence the masses. The question becomes whether these sources really inform the people, or just put information out that benefits the few. Evening news is where the breaking stories take place and where we can see the difference in channel ideology. Citizens have a right to know what is going on in the country but due to biases we see this fail. This causes televison to poison the electoral system, glorify conflicts, and polarize views.
Plaguing over 310 million Americans with an STD so horrifying, it is everywhere - nearly every news channel, nearly every newspaper, and nearly every news websites gives it to the people. This STD is one that has grown to the government, grown to the politics and grown to the society of our county. This STD is softness, transience and distortion within the media in our country. Every single American is prone to this sickening disease. By softening the news, breaking stories in a transient time without full accuracy and distorting the meaning of stories the news has made the American people a recipient of an STD.
The media brings forward information on world issues that could be misleading from the actual significance of the story. Bias media comes from many media outlets such as: news producers, social media, and journalists who make false claims to gain more attraction to an audience who interprets the issues inaccurately. The articles “NRA sues Florida over a new gun law in wake of Stoneman Douglas shooting” and “Will Parkland Change the Gun Debate?” lean towards moderate bias because it contains the main viewpoint of gun control in Florida, but then moves away from it with unimportant side stories. Unlike the article “Transcript: Stoneman students' questions to lawmakers and the NRA at the CNN town hall” contain barely any bias because it states
Iraqi crisis has always been under the consideration of media and politicians to the Middle East in particular and to the whole world in general in recent years. The media are concerned with how they tend not to present reality in a neutral manner. Therefore, they resort to manipulation, deception, and lying in order to manipulate the truth for no other purpose than to mislead and persuade readers (hearers) and satisfy the interests of their politicians. Even news which is governed by values of truthfulness, accuracy, and integrity, has always been the object of criticism by politicians who represent different conflicted countries.
People are what they consume does not just apply to the foods they eat, but also to the news they take in (Arceneaux). The opinions people have are shaped by the information they receive. These opinions help to form the views and beliefs a person considers their values. Opinions also affect how people view others, most importantly those who have different values. Most often people consume their news from media outlets such as news stations, and these networks tend to be biased toward a certain party’s beliefs and values. Biased news can lead to reports that taint people’s opinions and views of those who associate with a party different than their own. Major news outlets’ bias causes society to have poor opinions of the political party opposite them because they paint the other party as liars and reinforce a party’s way of thinking.
Media bias has a tendency of expressing and showing what they want the viewer to focus on. Many online sources show what they want to be covered and how it should be covered. Every channel station cover the same topic but in their own point of view. Fox, Abc and CNN all state the same story but covered differently. In Fox News, Abby Wambach, retired soccer star, arrested for a DUI in Oregon. Abby Wambach was under the influence of alcohol. In Fox news it covers that Abby missed a red light and failed sobriety test and even the breath test.It also states when she retired and how long she has played and how she stated a statement on Facebook stating an apology. Abby was arrested by Sgt. Peter Simpson in Oregon. In Abc news, Abby was arrested
The term "media bias" implies a pervasive or widespread bias contravening the standards of journalism and is mostly a perceived notion that the press has and is pushing a specific viewpoint, instead of reporting news or airing programs in an objective way. Such bias often refers to media as a whole, such as a newspaper chain, or a given television or radio network, instead of individual reporters or writers of television shows (Wise GEEK, 2014).
The internet is an amazing outlet to receive media and news. But that has come at the cost of the credibility of the news as well. News is so rapid and expansive at this point, anyone can become involved with journalism. You can become knowledgeable on events in places you have never heard of or visited before in your life. Like with any technology, the internet can be abused. People can gain access to the internet and technology to produce content on the internet easily now. I see both sides of the issue and why both sides have concerns about the other. Some journalist is concerned because they want the integrity of the news to remain high. They want to make sure that nothing, but the facts are being reported. While others think that its people buying into the medias paranoia. Well let’s look at both sides of the issue
I also do not understand how ads before YouTube videos are fake news. They are just ads trying to sell real products. Although, I would like to know who you think is at fault for the fake news being spread throughout the media? In my personal opinion I believe the writers of the fake news are at fault because they know what they are writing is false. People like Cameron Harris just want to make money and do not care about whether they spread real facts or not. Do you think if we stopped fake news writers from making money, that it would also decrease the spread of fake information?
Fake news is the news that is found on the internet about someone or something and most people believe that everything they see on the internet has to be true. Fake news is a problem because most people in the United States and all around the world for that matter do not know how to tell the difference between what is real news and what is fake news. Fake news occurs so often on social media websites that people are starting to believe what they see without doing any research about the topic, people automatically assume that it has to be true because it is on the internet. Should social media be put to blame for all this fake news? Or should people be put to blame for believing the first thing that pops up without doing any sort of research
This article explains how informed teenagers with news that go on around the world. Even though we have easy access to news and current events a lot of people don’t use their resources to inform themselves on what happens within their surroundings. The main issue is how relevant and credible online sources tend to be nowadays, with social media it has become harder to tell apart facts from opinions. This has created a system called citizen journalism, which gives the public the chance to play a part of a role in the transmission of news with just using their phone. Meaning a lot of opinion based comments and posts that are being put on social media make it difficult for teenagers to tell apart reality from biased news. Researchers state that
I have a social media presence, therefore, I am an informed member of society. I read about the upcoming presidential election, thanks to my friends who clutter my Facebook newsfeed with articles about their preferred candidate. I scroll past graphic photos of scenes in Charlotte, North Carolina on Twitter. The news about Angelina and Brad Pitt’s divorce filled my email inbox to the brim.
A tool used on a day-to-day basis to shape political discourse, most often used in news media. Bias is inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair (OxfordDictionaryPress, 2015). Three news articles have been chosen for analysis on the topic of the MH-17, all with different opinions. The selected newspaper propaganda comes from ABC, Tribune and RT. One possible reason as to why these newspapers have varying opinions is due to them having different owners. For example, Rupert Murdoch, the multi-national owner of media outlets’ newspapers generally have the same viewpoint due to Murdoch instructing how he wants the news heard from his papers. The most common ways the news manipulate readers into telling their biased view of the story is through the use of language, the use of positive and negative words; selection and omission, ignoring some details and including others; and bias through use of statistics and crowd counts, inflation of numbers. Although, writers can also be oblivious to the use of bias because of their cultural beliefs.
