Imagine that your best friend in the entire world had been seeming dejected or sad. He/she doesn’t seem to want to come out of the house, hang out, or anything that they used to like, they don’t like anymore. These are two of many signs that they are dealing with depression. Should depression continue to be treated with medication and therapy, or should depression not be treated with medication and therapy? Depression should be treated with medication and therapy for the following reasons, medication can balance out their serotonin levels and help them feel more relaxed, talk therapy can help them to open up and possibly find the good from every situation, as well as medication and therapy can help “cure” the depressive symptoms.

Psychotherapy can help people cure depression by talking about their feelings, and try to find the good, even in a bad situation. Jill S. Zimmerman Rutledge, from New Moon Girls magazine says, “ A person who is clinically depressed will feel a lot better when they find a professional who can help figure out a way to cope with the depressed feelings.” If the patient talks to someone, they can gain perspective about the difficult situation - (New Moon Girls issue March-April 2015). Psychotherapy can teach the patient how to distract themselves, or what they can do to get you out of the low mood. Depression is a very hard illness to cure, but, daily antidepressants and weekly or monthly therapy can help depression over time. Depressive symptoms can be temporarily “fixed” by antidepressants, but more than likely, the depression will set in again. Although, if you use the drug treatment and therapy, depression has a lesser chance of returning. A new study with 595 patients with major depression showed that the best treatment plan involves a combination of psychotherapy and drug therapy. Fred Duman, M.D. says, “Even patients prescribed medication alone need psychological attention.
