Treatments of Depression An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older or about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year (mental disorders in america). 9.2 percent of the U.S population above 18 are diagnosed with a mood disorder as in depression. (Mental Disorders in America). There are many treatments for depression including natural therapy which consists of herb therapy and home remedies. There are also treatments that go straight to the brain, this treatment is electroconvulsive therapy. One of the most common forms of treatment is prescription pills and these are supposed to control the symptoms of depression disorder (mental health medication). All of these different form of treatments …show more content…
electroconvulsive therapy or more known as ECT is a general procedure, done under anesthesia, and this is when small electric currents are passed through the brain, which triggers a brief seizure. ECT seems to cause changes in brain chemistry that can quickly reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses (mayo clinic staff). Electroconvulsive therapy is mainly used as a last resort. The therapy is used for severe depression, which is a harsh form of depression which makes you detach from reality which is almost like psychosis, and treatment-resistant depression, which is a severe type of depression that does not respond to other types of treatment (mayo clinic staff). Within this type of treatment, there are many side effects and the people who get electroconvulsive therapy are normally non responsive or its their last hope to get better. Some of the side effects include, feeling odd or light headed, inence headache, slight memory loss, etc (electroconvulsive treatment). Some people got anxiety before having this treatment because of these side effects. This is the treatment that really takes a toll on people's lives because it can really change their life for the better or the …show more content…
With these medications people respond to them in different ways. Some people's symptoms won't be cured at first and that is why they have to try different medications before you find the right one (mental health medication). Even after a period of time their symptoms may come back which is why depressed patients on medication have to stay updated with their doctor. Just like ECT there are side effects to prescription medicine, some include nausea, weight gain and sleepiness. These are much less severe but their are still side effects that could really affect people. (mental health
Electroshock therapy is the process of electroshocking the brain of a human, this a process that takes multiple sessions (CBS News). ECT caused critical seizures. Doctors used this method to cure of reduce schizophrenia. Electroshock therapy was performed daily, it was known referred to as “The shock of the day” (D’Antonio). Doctors saw ECT as a easy and fast way to cure a patient.
What remains unknown is why electroconvulsive therapy is effective. A plethora of studies show the neurochemical correlates of this treatment and its relation to the anti-depressant effect, yet none are conclusive. Richard Abrams has studied ECT for years and discusses a wide variety of reasons for its effectiveness in his revised edition of Electroconvulsive Therapy. For a person who has studied this treatment for 50 years, he concludes
It is estimated that thirty-two to thirty-five million U.S. citizens will experience depression during their life (DeRubeis, Hollon, Siegle 2). Depression can be treated with a Non Pharmacological method that is therapy or a Pharmacological method that is medication. Non Pharmacological Treatments (NPTs) are more effective when treating depression. All forms of NPT reduce depression symptoms and there is little to no side effects, in most of the methods.
Outline the four major clusters of depressive symptoms and explain each one in detail: Emotional; Cognitive; Motivational; Somatic.
ECT has become much safer than the dangerous past shown in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Electroconvulsive therapy has little resemblance to that depiction. ECT brings about fast results compared to some other medications and treatments. After the shock, there is immediate relief to the symptoms of many mental illnesses. The electric current only lasts for a few seconds and the seizure lasts for about a minute. Many medications take weeks to become effective and ECT is an ideal option for those people that need the relief right away. ECT has often worked when many other treatments have
Prior to this assignment, my feelings from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) solely came from images in the media. Two instances that stand out to me is the portrayal of ECT in an episode of "American Horror Story: Asylum" and from the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Although I realize media is not an accurate representation of reality, these scenes stood out to me due to the intense, emotional display of ECT's effects through the patient's eyes. Despite the unrealistic depiction of ECT, one accurate aspect of the scenes is that ECT was commonly used during the 1960s-1970s to improve mental disturbances and a variety of psychological disorders. I think the reason these scenes stood out to me was that ECT was implemented without the patient's informed consent or agreement upon the treatment regimen, utilized as a way to subdue patients into compliance. Contrary to modern use of ECT, this type of therapy was used as a form of punishment, implemented
However, the issue is far more complicated than that. Treating depression requires many challenging components, antidepressants are only one them. Each person responds to antidepressants differently, which means that one drug capable of curing everyone does not exist. Antidepressants have proven to be ineffective for patients with mild to moderate symptoms, and what’s more, these drugs that nobody has proven to be completely effective come with some very serious side effects. At the very least, it’s fair to say that medication alone usually is not enough. Treating depression requires therapy and lifestyle changes not medication.
Electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT, is a medical procedure that is used in the treatment of mental illness. In ECT, a small electrical impulse is sent through the brain, resulting in an ephemeral seizure. Though the process is generally effective, modern science is unaware of the explanation behind ECT's success. Its history is filled with a large amount of stigma and the use of ECT as a therapy is still debated today. ECT has evolved to a point where its beneficial effects can be maximized and its adverse effects can be minimized through proper administration.
After researching electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), I have decided that if a close family member or even myself were severely depressed I would not support the use of ECT. Electroconvulsive therapy consists of an electrical shock, which is used to produce a seizure. Many people experience seizures due to some other type of illness or illnesses, and in these cases there is medicine taken in order to prevent these occurrences. In deciding my opinion on the topic of ECT I asked myself would I want to put myself or a loved one through what others are trying to avoid; a seizure. Although ECT has proven to be effective in some cases of depression, it has many risk factors involved and it does not ensure a lifetime with out the reoccurrence of
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental illness in which the brain is stimulated with a strong electrical current which induces a seizure. The seizure rearranges the brain's neurochemistry and results in an elevation of mood. This essay asks: Is ECT any safer and more effective in treating mood disorders than drug therapies? This treatment has a controversial history ever since it was first introduced in 1938. I intend to argue that electroconvulsive therapy is indeed a safe treatment of mental disorders when other treatments have failed. Due to the development of safer and less traumatic ways of administering ECT, the treatment has made a comeback, is greatly used, and proves to be
Placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that medications for mental health disorders reduce or eliminate symptoms. For example, antidepressant medications such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) consistently reduce symptoms of depression by 30 percent to 60 percent overall and lead to complete remission in a significant proportion of patients. Effective
The first step to treating many of these new cases of depression is the prescription and use of antidepressant medication, however this has cause a mass flooding of our society with unnecessary prescription drugs. Due to the ease of treatment, primarily with prescription drugs, and the large range of severity in depression is often over diagnosed, adding to the problem.
According to the literature on this topic, both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy have the potential to ease somebodies symptoms of depression. It seems that depending on how severe, or what type of depression the patient has there are different
Moreover, a significant aspect in depression that is not commonly addressed by doctors in depression treatment, is lifestyle. Lifestyle is the way someone--or a group of people--live(s). It is "the living conditions, behaviors, and habits that are typical of them or are chosen by them," (Collins, 2017, para. 1). There four major factors of someone's lifestyle which affect depression: physical activity, diet, sunlight, and social connection. To properly treat individuals with depression, treatment needs to be lifestyle-oriented and address these highly influential factors.
Electroconvulsive therapy ECT is a type of treatment that is used primarily to treat mental disorders such as sever depression, also its used to treat some cases which have some medical conditions contraindicated to use some drugs such as anti depressant or anti psychotic and the patients who have not responded to their treatment, and some patients need to rapid treatment response, so there are a rules for ECT guide to decrease side effects of ECT therapy, this rules include: consent form must be obtained, a comprehensive medical examination must be performed before, everything needed for emergency situation must be available such as: CPR medication, cardio version,.., close observation for patient during and after treatment(APA,2001).
