The Nurse and Friar Lawrence are mentors to the young people in “Romeo and Juliet”. The Nurse tried her best to help Juliet and was the person who raised her. Friar Lawrence gave advice to Romeo and tries to keep him on track. I think these two mentors made many wrong decisions. Friar Lawrence’s biggest mistake was the plan to get Romeo and Juliet back together and leave to Mantua. Thou shalt be borne to that same ancient vault Where all the kindred of the Capulets lie. In the meantime, against thou shalt awake, Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, And hither shall he come, and he and I Will watch thy waking, and that very night Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua. I think this is a bad plan because Juliet could just leave to Mantua …show more content…
After this we know how the play will end. The Nurse does a better job mentoring Juliet I think. She does what Juliet wants her to if she feels it is a good idea and helps Romeo and Juliet communicate. The Nurse does not fully understand how Juliet feels about Romeo. The Nurse gives good advice about marrying Paris but Juliet doesn’t accept it and gets the plan from Friar Lawrence. Romeo’s a dishclout to him. An eagle, madam, Hath not so green, so quick, so fair an eye As Paris hath. Beshrew my very heart, I think you are happy in this second match, For it excels your first. Or if it did not, Your first is dead, or ’twere as good he were, As living here and you no use of him None of the characters in this play use common sense. The Nurse and the Friar don’t think with common sense and come up with ideas that could work but are not the best answer. The Nurse and Friar Lawrence guided the characters well in some spots. The Nurse was very supportive when Juliet wanted to marry Romeo. Friar Lawrence had the great idea of marrying Romeo and Juliet because it might stop the fighting between the Capulets and the Montagues. The best thing these mentors could have done was try to guide them out of trouble and they
This conflict in viewpoint shows itself when she encourages Juliet to overlook the expelled Romeo and wed Paris, deceiving Juliet's trust by upholding a false marriage: I think it best you wedded with the County. O, he's a lovely gentleman . Romeo's a dishclout to him. Juliet can hardly imagine how the nurse offers such a strategy after she praised Romeo and united the couple. The nurse attendant is at last subject to the impulses of society. Her social position puts her in the serving class — she isn't enabled to make change around her. Her maternal nature toward Juliet floats her to help Juliet in wedding Romeo; be that as it may, when Capulet winds up incensed, the Medical caretaker withdraws rapidly into accommodation and desires Juliet to overlook
Despite all of these actions which ultimately ended in chaos, I don't think that the Friar or the Nurse were to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. On some level their actions did partake in what eventuated in the tragedy, but they came with the best intentions, with high hopes that they would be able to save a young couple's love and end a bitter feud. Friar Laurence did bring the families together, but it was with death rather than marriage. O brother Montague, give me thy hand. (V, 3, 232)
The Roles of Friar Lawrence and the Nurse in the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet
The nurse is very loyal to Juliet as shown in the past quote. The nurse is taking a chance at talking to Romeo for she knows that he is of the house of Montague and god knows the penalty for the interaction between.
On the other hand, it must be recognised that other characters apart from the Nurse, played a significant role in the misfortune. The flaws in Romeo and Juliet?s character- their hastiness, contributed greatly to their demise. Juliet?s extreme willingness to marry the day after she meets Romeo was much too unadvised and sudden, evidence of her hastiness. Romeo?s tendency to ?stand on sudden haste? is evident from the fact that he kills Tybalt in a sudden fit of rage and rushes to Juliet?s tomb, prepared for death, without first confirming her death. Friar Lawrence, too, was a character whose actions proved to be fatal. He did not heed his own advice of ?wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast?, but proceeded to marry and be supportive of the couple, knowing full well that ?violent delights have violent ends?.
The Nurse and Friar are very important characters in the play, but Friar Laurence seems to be the more likable one. He goes straight to the point without straying off into another subject in a conversation. He weds Romeo and Juliet hoping the feud between the Capulets and Montague will cease with the new lovers. This shows that the Friar does care for the people in Verona and wishes only the happiness for Romeo and Juliet. The Nurse is more erratic and spontaneous. She tends to be more amusing because of her eccentric actions. She cares an awful lot for Juliet, but also looks out for her self because she might get punish for being involve with the marriage of Romeo and Juliet:
In this quote, The Nurse tells Juliet that she believes Juliet is in love with Romeo for his looks only, and also herself believes Romeo is handsome herself, though she does not disapprove of Juliet’s feelings towards him.
Supporting the Friar’s dismal assessment of Romeo is the Nurse. I will direct her to be the funny character in the scene, her face underlining how ridiculous Romeo appears, bawling like a woman on the floor. She even looks appalled as she asks Rome to stand up and be a man, instead of blubbering on the floor. Still, as the Nurse describes Juliet's misery, she would exude deep concern like a mother would. Her face depicts that if there is anyone who loves Juliet as much as Romeo, it is her for she is similar to a mother who cares only for her child's happiness and nothing
Without the help of the Nurse, Romeo and Juliet would not have married or had a way to interact with each other. This is clearly shown in Act II Scene V where the Nurse talks to Romeo about the marriage plans. “I will tell her, sir that up do protests, which, as I take it is a gentlemanlike offer.”(836) If the Nurse had not been present as a messenger, communication between Romeo and Juliet would have been difficult and extremely risky. The Nurse is a mother figure to Juliet because, she takes care of Juliet and gives her advice. There are many situations where Juliet relies on the Nurse. For instance on her wedding night, the nurse helps Romeo by getting him a ladder to Juliet’s room. Thus, the Nurse influences the story by bringing the two young lovers together and helping them marry.
The Nurse is a good friend of Juliet´s and also played a big role in raising her. The nurse wanted the best for juliet and for her to be happy therefore, she encouraged her to get married. ¨Is your man secret? Did you ne'er hear say, Two may keep counsel, putting one away..¨(2.4, 185) This showed how the nurse knew how dangerous it was for the people to find out they were married yet, she still allowed the marriage and told them to betray their parents and keep it secret. The nurse also sent Romeo letters for Juliet to keep them in contact. ¨There stays a husband to make you a wife. Now comes the wanton blood up in your cheeks.¨(2.5). This shows that the nurse had talked to romeo. Although, Friar is the one who brought the idea of
This proves that The Nurse does not have any pre judgmental thoughts about Romeo, that she believes in him, and is substantial because it solidifies that she is kind not only just to Juliet (Act 3, Scene 3, line 85-173). The Friar actually accompanies her in this scene, acting out the same behavior, attempting to keep Romeo from slipping into a deep depression at the thought of never seeing Juliet again. And When The Nurse is commanded by Lord Capulet to bring forth the news to Juliet that she must marry Paris, though reluctant as she is, she agrees that marrying Paris would be in her best interests, and The Nurse tells Juliet what she must do which is critical because it validates that The Nurse will do anything to keep Juliet from harm even if she does not like it. Although marrying Paris is not something Juliet wants to do, The Nurse knows that that is what is best for her, and Juliet lies and tells her that she will marry him (Act 3, Scene 5, Lines 176-246).
The Role of the Nurse in Her Relationship with Juliet in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
The Nurse in the famous play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare plays a major role in uniting Juliet to her love, Romeo. The Nurse’s key function in the storyline is to act as a messenger between Romeo and Juliet. The Nurse also offers comic relief to the seriousness of the structure of Shakespeare’s play. The Nurse engages the audience with some dirty jokes, which allows the audience to have a sense of humour. The relationship between the Nurse and Juliet began with a love-teasing sort of relationship, but when Juliet needs her most, Juliet views the Nurse as her own mother.
Friar lawrence didn’t immediately agree with the idea of marriage between the two families but he started to believe that maybe it could bring peace between them, “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” Romeo and Juliet can’t trust anyone with a secret this big for fear of parents or other family members might find out, but Juliet tells The Nurse, who has acted as her mother since she was born, about what is going on, and she doesn’t disagree with it. Juliet sends the Nurse on her way to Romeo with a note about the
The Nurse is the only other person that knew about the secret relationship between Romeo and Juliet. She was sort of Juliet’s messenger in the story, she told Romeo about the marriage and when he was going to see Juliet again. Then towards the ending of the story she started realizing that Juliet’s parents were not going to let her marry anyone but Paris. So Nurse tried to help Juliet realize that, and it only made Juliet more upset and run off to Friar. When Juliet was upset she told Nurse that she was going to pay respects, nurse knew that wasn’t true and did nothing about it, if Nurse would have stopped Juliet from going to Friar she could have prevented the whole plan and stopped the events leading to Romeo and Juliet’s death. But Romeo and Juliet made it very difficult for the Nurse and Friar help them because they wanted nothing but to be together and they wouldn’t wait for anything.
