According to the CDC, obesity is the number one health threat facing America. More than 1/3 of U.S. adults andc16% of children are obese. Obesity rates have increased exponentially over the last 40 years in every socio-economic group causing health care costs of an estimated $117 billion.

There is a push across the country for Americans to get healthy. The business of weight loss is a $40 - $50 billion industry with many paths to shedding those unwanted pounds. Be it a fad diet, a surgery for weight loss, a support program or good old diet and exercise; the path to losing weight and getting healthy is achievable with hard work and determination.

Some insurance providers cover the surgical procedure, depending on the patient’s coverage and medical needs. This method of weight loss requires serious consideration as there are complications that can come along with each type of these procedure. Some individuals experience digestive complications, severe nausea or intestinal discomfort. The procedure has proven to be an effective method of weight loss for morbidly obese individuals. Aside from the medical risks, the excess skin that comes as a result of the rapid reduction in weight, can also become an issue. All aspects of these procedures should be considered thoroughly and the potential risks mitigated as much as possible.

Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and Nutri-System are fee based weight-loss support programs that provide meal plans, fitness education and therapy. Dieters can go to meetings, purchase program specific meals formulated to promote portion control and exclude some ingredients, and utilize a physical fitness program designed specifically for them. These programs are fee based in addition to the cost of food which can be prohibitive for families that don’t have much disposable income.
