Coming from a Mexican based family, most of my family are native to Mexico along with my parents. My mother, Maricela Fernandez, born in Mexicali, Mexico and my father, Julio Jaquez, born in Texas, originally raised in Sinaloa, Mexico.The “American Dream” is prevalent in every Mexican family who craves a better life for their family and themselves. The idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and initiative; that was what my family was after for. Both of my grandparents on each side would transport back and forth from Mexico to the United States to work. These low wage jobs in the agricultural fields supported families of 8 to 9, but unfortunately wore my grandparents out by the cruel sun and stiff job conditions. Eventually deciding to move to the United States, my grandparents brought their families and settled in Woodburn. At age 14, both of my parents came to the little town of Woodburn in Oregon and would attend Woodburn High. From working several jobs at a time to make sure I had everything I needed, she became the reason why I was raised the way I raised. The lesson that “ I should treat everyone like the most important person in the world because I will never know when I might need them” was engraved in my head was owned by my mother. Sometimes she would tell me that she had holes in her socks and I knew it was due to most of her money going towards my private school tuition in order for me to be able to have the best education I could get. My mother is my background, my identity, interest, and talent. She is truly the one that has set me up for success, regardless of how fatigued or overworked she is. She is the person who truly defines who I am and who I have become to this
