My Hispanic heritage shaped my life because I of what my family has overcome. My grandparents from both of my parent’s sides of the family picked cotton and vegetables in the fields to help their families. I have learned from my parents and grandparents stories that it is worth working hard in school to obtain a good job in the future. Both of my parents went to college and they have been a great inspiration to me. Not all of my aunts and uncles have had good jobs. Some of them only graduated from high school. For example, my Uncle Romeo become a construction worker after he graduated from high school. It is difficult for him to buy his kids what they want and need, and even provide for himself. Although he is a diligent individual, he wishes that he could have been able to attend college and have a different career. He has used

Identity is an essential necessity for humans to demonstrate the distinct individual. A person’s identity may take time to develope as the person acquires new interests, influences, and comprehension of the surrounding people. Authors such as Adrienne Rich and Gloria Anzaldua write about the struggles persistent in identity. Rich is identified by her gender and race by other people, while Anzaldua is defined as to what a Mexican American women should be. As a Mexican American, Amelia Mendoza, my best friend, encounters the strains of identity.

As a Hispanic American, I have been exposed to the beauty of my ancestors culture, while living in a country with one of its own. Being the first generation to be born in the United States of America, coming from a family whose roots deeply stem from the Dominican Republic, is an interesting dynamic. While my family is well adjusted to living in the States, they still celebrate as if they were back in their birthplace. They eat, drink, and dance as if they were back home. They speak Spanish to each other despite knowing perfect English. They remind us first generation kids, how privileged we are to be born in the States. Growing up Mexican-American is similar to living a dual-identity. It feels as if I’m stuck in-between a border where I am unsure if I’m more American or more Mexican. Mexican-Americans have to live a life of proving themselves to the world. There are a vast number of cultures around the world, with things that makes each of them unique. What is culture? “Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts”. (Zimmerman 1) In other words culture is everything that makes us who we are and it’s the building blocks that created the society that we were raised in. While doing research I found out that I closely identify with the Southern American culture. The three things that identify my Southern culture are the Music, food, and religion.

You're Mexican?” is a question that I have constantly asked since a young age. As a person of Mexican descent and little resemblance to stereotypical appearance- brown eyes, short, and black hair, it is of no surprise that this occurs. This unintentionally vindictive comment tells me,”No you're not Mexican because you do not look the part.” This view of ethnicity not only hurts me, but also spits on my culture. The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one’s life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, “culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization.” From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.” Culture is one of the things that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.

There are many different languages spoken around the world. Sometimes it can create a barrier when trying to communicate. Other times it may cause you to be judged because you have a different accent, or you use different terminology. Language can play a small role in how people’s identities are formed., The language variety that you speak as a native language is closely tied to your geographical identity.

I currently enjoy shocking people with my heritage because there is still a stigma about what a "Haitian" should look like, sound like, etc. I'd say that because I was such a scared little kid who didn't talk much, my family could do little to support me because they didn't know I was having issues (A. Benjamin, personal communication, Dec 1, 2009). This is saying that if you do not walk, talk, or think like them; then you are not considered to be of that ethnicity.
