Michael Carneal had no known history of mental illness before the shooting (Newman et al., 2004 p.59). “After the shooting, a history of mental illness on his father’s side of the family was uncovered” (Newman et al., 2004 p.59). He was later diagnosed with schizophrenia that was treated with antipsychotic medication. He was considered to be suicidal. Michael Carneal was under medication to help him with his mental illness. He indicated he was having hallucinations during the shooting and his plea. He also wrote letters describing how he felt alienated since kindergarten. He suffered from depression and there is no evidence of family issues. Mitchell Johnson has no evidence of mental illness. Mitchell Johnson was suicidal months prior to his shooting rampage. During the time of the shooting he was suffering from depression. There is no evidence his family had problems. His partner Andrew Golden was not diagnosed with a mental illness, he was considered to be suicidal and suffered from depression. He came from an abusive family. Unfortunately we have little information about the mental health of either Mitchell Johnson or Andrew Golden (Newman et al., 2004). Newman et al., (2004) stated “it is a source of depression for teenagers, especially boys, and it requires attention in its own right” (p. 292). Schools have responded to school bullying with school monitors and mentors. Mentors help not only trouble students but are there for all students. Mentors provide one on one student interaction with an adult, whom can gain trust of the student body. The majority of perpetrators discussed their plans with peers.
