Michael Gerard Tyson was born in Brooklyn, NYC June 30, 1966. His upbringing in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn was mainly in the streets. Tyson’s dad abandoned the family for a street life, leaving Mike’s mother to care for three kids. His mom, brother, and sister were forced to move from a nice apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant to the tough neighborhood for financial reasons when Mike was 8 yrs old. (Wikipedia, 2014, December, p. 2) Things got very bad in the neighborhood to the point they had no heat or water in their building because thieves came in and stole the pipes. Tyson was already committing small crimes in the neighborhood at this time. He was in with a bad crowd and at age 10 Tyson and his burglary crew went after a rival gang with stolen guns and shot at them. Running around unsupervised in the impoverished, high crime neighborhoods Mike Tyson had been arrested 38 times by the time he was 13 yrs old. I believe a Psychological Theory could have been applied. More specifically, the Psychodynamic Theory, the Personality Theory, and the Cognitive Theory. He has attended therapy off and on through the years and is diagnosed with manic depression and bi-polar disorder. He has personally spoke of his impulse control issues as an adult and his constant struggles with anger. As a child he was constantly in trouble with the law and not learning from his arrests and punishment. Drugs and alcohol became a big part of his childhood and at age 11 he tried cocaine for the first time. This no doubt had an effect on his cognitive development at this stage of his life.
