"The Chicago Bulls select...Michael Jordan of the University of North Carolina." These are the words that came out of David Stern, the National Basketball Association (NBA) commissioner's mouth when the Chicago Bulls drafted Michael Jordan who would grow up to be one of the best basketball players ever. He solidified himself as a basketball star in college after committing to the University of North Carolina, earning the starting spot on the team as a freshman, and winning an NCAA championship after a tough high school career. When Jordan didn't make his high school team as a sophomore, he got up at 6:00 am everyday to improve his basketball skills. "Michael's athletic skills awed everyone, but even more impressive was his commitment to improve" (Minsky 108). This quote is explaining that Jordan had amazing skills on the court, but what impressed everyone more than that he was always determined to improve. Jordan's determination would help him later in his career, and it is inspiring to young athletes. Going into college, he was not recognized as a top prospect. He was finally recognized at a basketball camp by Roy Williams, who was the coach of the Kansas basketball team. Roy Williams invited him to the Five Star Camp, which is the top camp in the country. He got there for the final two weeks, and won the camp's MVP. When Jordan won the camp MVP, it made him and college coaches realize he could be a star. He ended up signing with the University of North Carolina, where he earned the starting spot as a freshman. North Carolina won the NCAA championship after Jordan made a last second shot over two defenders to win the game against Georgetown. He was drafted third overall in the NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. When he entered the NBA, the Bulls were one of the worst teams in the NBA. As a rookie, Jordan turned the Bulls into a playoff team. "Michael far exceeded anything imagined. Jordan instantly established himself as a first-rate scorer who could rebound, pass, and play ferocious defense" (Minsky 110). For his unbelievable season, Jordan was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year. In the next season, the Bulls made the playoffs again, even with Michael sidelined for sixty games with a broken foot. In the playoffs, Jordan was cleared to play five minutes, but ended up playing a lot more than that. He set a playoff record with sixty-three points in a game, and he amazingly did this while he was just getting over a broken foot. "His victory was all the more sweet for the adversity he had encountered along the way, including his annual frustration in the playoffs and the criticism he regularly received in the media. Still, Michael's unbending passion made him a hero to most fans" (Minsky 115). This quote is saying that after he won his first NBA championship, it was even better for everyone because of the criticism he was facing for losing in the playoffs for a few years before that year.
