Known as one of the greatest artist of all time that came out of the Renaissance, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese Italy. Michelangelo’s father worked for the Florentine government and when Michelangelo was only a few weeks old he moved his family back to Florence Italy and this would become the place where Michelangelo would fall in love and learn about art. As Michelangelo grew he became more interested with art and became fascinated with the painters and drawings at some of the local churches. Michelangelo’s mother died when he was six years old and after learning and seeing his son’s love of art, Michelangelo’s father did not approve. Finally at the age of thirteen Michelangelo’s father allowed him to became a formal apprenticed to Domenico Ghirlandaio who was known for his murals. …show more content…

Being able to study classical sculpture in the Medici gardens from 1489 to 1492 opened many doors for Michelangelo. He was able to study under the respected sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni and exposing him to prominent poets, scholars and learned Humanists (The Biography.com website). Because of the mentors and influences that Michelangelo learned from this allowed him to form his own distinctive style which was a “muscular precision and reality combined with an almost lyrical beauty” (The Biography.com website) and by the age of sixteen he had already sculptured two relief statues – The Battle of the Centaurs and The Madonna of the Stairs. The death of Lorenzo de’ Medici led Michelangelo to move to Bologna and then in 1496 to Rome.
