On December 5, 1901, one of the greatest film directors ever was born. His name is Walter Elias Disney and he had a major impact on the way movies and tv shows are today. I believe that because of his father, he became the man we know him as today. His father was a very strict, highly religious man. Walt was raised in a lower middle class family so he started from the bottom and worked his way up. For him money has always been a problem he had problems with the bank when he was first starting out. He starting working at a very young age. At the age of 14 it all started, he was a paperboy. Walter Elias (Walt) Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. He was born into a middle class family, and was of five children. He grew up in Marceline, Missouri, and began art and drawing at a young age. Walt was a boy with big dreams. He loved drawing and animation. As Walt got older, he began to study art and drawing in High School. In addition to drawing, Disney loved to act a perform; his father,however, was stern and very unsupportive, so Walt was forced to perform against his father’s will.

With his fellow artists in Kansas City Walt began his long endeavour into the art of production. Working with his brother Roy and a few others Walt worked his way to his dream, and in 1923 he was able to set up his studio in Hollywood where his first famous cartoons were produced. Walter and his partners had previously aired their cartoons dubbed Laugh-O-Grams which were wildly popular and after they created a series of seven-minute fairy tales that combined live action and animation. The 1920s, nicknamed the roaring 20s, was a time of new dance, clothing, and cartoons. People doing the Charleston, woman daring society by dressing in heels and dresses, and people creating exciting new cartoons. Betty Boop, Felix the Cat, Bugs Bunny, and of course Mickey Mouse were all popular cartoons in the 1920s. I use to have this dog named Mickey. We named him that because on his back there were 3 spots that looked like Mickey Mouse. Mick was a Jack Russell who wore snow white fur with brown and black blotches. He was about shin-high and 2 feet long. He was 45lb, which is about 30lb overweight for his breed. Mickey could only use 3 of his legs; to explain, when he was 2 years old, he would chase cars that went past our house and one day he got too close. My mom was outside and sprinted over to Mick and saw he was still alive. She rushed him to the animal hospital in Plain City and got help immediately. The vets told my mom that one of the nerves in his front left legs was broken and it can’t be healed. This happened before I was born, so I always knew Mickey with 3 functional legs and 1 broken leg.

He got denied to fight because he was too young. So Walt lied about his age, and he got a job as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross. The Red Cross sent him to work in France, and of course in his free time, Walt drew cartoons. When he came back he didn’t want to work for his dad again, “I want to be an artist.”(Walt Disney) So he moved to Missouri, and when he finally found a job, it only lasted for six months. During those six months, Walt met a man named Ubbe Iwerks. The two men decided to go into business together. They wanted to make animations, or pictures that move. To make money to help make the animations, Walt and Ub made short films, which were about a minute long. Their first production was, “The Alice Comedies.” Walt wanted to make loner movies though which were about seven minutes long. He longed to make fairy tales. Walt and Ub finally came out with the production of Little Red Riding Hood. It took six months. Both men quit their day jobs, and opened a company called Laugh-O-Gram
