The Roaring Twenties occurred from 1920 to 1929 and was known as the decade of having fun and spending money. This era in history presents the flourishing of mass-production and consumerism within the economy. This success initially resulted in profiting investors as well as raising the living standard of both the middle and working-class. After World War I, America was introduced to various innovations such as the radio and aviation. When asking Elysia about the Roaring Twenties, she told me that she learned a lot about the topic in 12th grade when reading the popular novel, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both the upper and middle classes were positively affected during the decade. For example, the rich were simply getting wealthier because they owned stocks in the stock market and were bringing in additional money to contribute to their established income. In relation to the upper-class, however, the middle-class still had to work for their money, but it was more convenient and rewarding compared to the previous years before. Technologically advanced products such as household appliances and cars became much more affordable due to the mastery of the Henry Ford assembly line technique. Although the working-class still had to perform labor for low wages, the fair cost for these materialistic goods improved the quality of life for families. On the other hand, the Roaring Twenties was a terrible decade for farmers. During World War I, farmers would take out a large lump sum of loans to afford tractors along with other farm machinery due to the high demand of food needed for soldiers. After the war ended, farmers no longer needed to supply food to the surrounding countries, which resulted in a surplus of agricultural goods along with the deflation of prices on corn, cotton, and wheat.
