During a crusade, the soldiers would sew a cross onto their outfit and fight for Christianity. The most well known crusades was the journey that the Roman Catholics started in order to conquer Palestine and Jerusalem from the Muslims. The crusades started in 1905 from Pope Urban II. The first crusade was started by the French and Norman wealthy and they captured Edessa, Jerusalem, Antioch, and more. Because of the crusades, the Muslims settled their disputes in order to go against the Christian forces.

The Crusades were great military missions developed by Christian nations of Europe for the purpose of rescuing the Holy Land of Jerusalem from the hands of the Moslems. Jerusalem was extremely important to the Moslems and Christians at this time. Many religious events happened there, and many landmarks of both religions were located in Jerusalem. There were many Crusades some more significant than others, but in general the Crusades were very important to the spread of Christianity and religious based knowledge. In 1099 the Knights' Crusade captured Jerusalem, which remained in Christians control for almost 200 years.

The Crusades began when the Byzantine sovereign Alexius I Comnenus requested help against the Seljuk Turks. Seljuk Turks were Muslims that had taken control of the Asia Minor. Jerusalem is also significant to Christians because it is the site of various saints or profits like Abraham, Solomon, David, Zachary and others (“The Importance of”). But Jerusalem is also valuable to Muslims for multiple reasons too, so much so that the Arabic translation is even “The Noble, Sacred Place.” Jerusalem was even the first Qiblah, the direction Muslims turn towards in prayer, meaning that they would turn to face Jerusalem when praying. It was also the location that Muhammad, messenger and prophet of God, took Muhammad from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to the Furthest Mosque (Al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem. He was then “taken up to the heavens to be shown the signs of God” (Dodge). The Prophet met with previous prophets and led them in a prayer. The entire journey lasted only a few hours (Dodge). It becomes obvious why the Christians and Muslims would go to such great lengths to possess this once city.
